In a previous post, I wrote about books we are considering for our next Community read. This is one that my coworker is thinking about and thus recommended to me. The artwork is beautiful! The story is all about pride, conviction, and holding onto your sense of self even if the powers that be don‘t want you to. #pop23 #bookthatafriendrecommended

squirrelbrain Just looked back at some other reviews / pictures on here and, you‘re right, the artwork is lovely! 14mo

My loan on Lute ran out just at a very good part. I was looking for graphic novels to read until the print version comes in tomorrow. I remembered that @Soscha recommended Borders and I couldn't agree more. It's beautifully illustrated and has a newsworthy plot dealing with Native Americans and citizenship. Kindness also comes from an unusual place.

I saw @Johanna414 s review of this earlier today and I had to immediately check if it was on Libby since it plays to 2 of my weaknesses. I deeply love and miss the colors of the southwest! And stuck between borders is a trope that interests me 🤷🏻‍♀️. This didn‘t blow me away but I enjoyed it. I found it thoughtful and hopeful, and the art wasn‘t derivative which I always appreciate.

Johanna414 Glad you liked it! I had initially picked it up just to figure out if it was yeared towards YA or MG audiences so i knew which students to recommend it to... was pleasantly surprised! 2y
jlhammar Have you tried this one yet? Really good with some stunning artwork. 2y

This middle grade graphic novel by Thomas King and Natasha Donovan is about a mother and son who become trapped between the American and Canadian borders when the only nationality they claim is Blackfoot. It's one that really makes you think about the triviality of these borders made by colonizers on groups of people who have been on this land for hundreds of years, and how that affects them today.

kellyann28 Ooh thanks for this review! I'll check it out 2y

Citizenship?
Blackfoot.
This graphic novel illustrated by Métis artist Natasha Donovan adapts for young audiences Thomas King‘s short story about a woman and her son, trapped in between the US and Canadian border stations. Indigenous people have the right to cross the international border without claiming Canadian or American citizenship. In practice, it‘s often not so easy. A powerful portrayal of identity. #Canadian #comics for #AllAges

It was surreal to be reading this book set at the Coutts border crossing at the same time as the truck convoy (aka the crybaby convoy) was blocking this entry point between the US and Canada.

Another book I was supposed to get to in November for Native American lit. This is a very simple graphic novel about identity. Since the story telling is so sparse I wish there were some author notes to help flesh it out.
