Wretchedness
Wretchedness | Andrzej Tich
4 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
Waiting by the canal, a young cellist meets a junkie, high and drifting. He gives him twenty krona and they exchange a few words; the encounter is unremarkable. Yet for the cellist - who grew up a poor immigrant in the outskirts of Malm, and who lost friends and family to drug abuse, crime and death - a barrier in his mind has collapsed, and he leaves the canal chased by a creeping floodtide of memories, all of which threaten to drag him back to where he came from. Tearing through sprawling social housing estates, basement clubs and squat parties,Wretchedness is a tumultuous and raging journey into the underbelly of Europe. With a rhythmic, mesmerising flow, Tich probes the bittersweet pleasures of escaping one's origins, and of loving one's neighbour without question - even when that neighbor is an addict, a criminal, wretched.

Mehso-so

In Cody, young musician, short interaction with homeless man causes a continuous stream of memories on poverty, society, emigration/migration, drug use, fighting, empty existence, racism ... I, usually, like the stream of consciousness, but in this book the content is just overshadowed by this literary style. Difficult structure of this story is also in the close connection with the composer Scelsi and his work. While I appreciate author‘s 👇

Simona .... intentions, I can‘t say that I like the result, although - I liked the end. Here is the link to the glowing review, where is also explained the connection between this story and composer Scelsi. https://www.thewhitereview.org/reviews/andrzej-tichys-wretchedness/ #InternationalBookerPrize2021 (edited) 3y

Pickpick

My first complete surprise of the #InternationalBookerPrize2021 longlist. I don‘t usually do at all well with gritty, trippy or stream-of-consciousness, but I loved this one. And the soundtrack would be AMAZING!

A cellist waits for colleagues on a canal footpath. He‘s asked for some change, triggering thoughts of where he‘s come from, the life he (was) expected to lead. It‘s incredibly disorientating, beautifully written- and Yes to that ending!

squirrelbrain Great review! Stacked. 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain I should probably add content warnings for everything- but mainly drug use. 3y

BookwormM This was the one I was least looking forward to based on title glad to hear it‘s good 3y
rockpools @BookwormM Yes - I expected unrelenting grimness. Which isn‘t to say it‘s a cheery read, but i got stuff out of it. 3y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 3y
Lauredhel That does sound on the grim side! Glad you liked it though :) 3y

Starting April with books from the #InternationalBookerPrize2021 longlist.

Really excited to read Inventory of Losses - but wish I‘d bought the print. Schalansky‘s Atlas of Remote Islands is just a beautiful thing, and she talks about book design in this preamble. Not too sure why it‘s in a fiction prize, but ok.

Wretchedness was the one my library had. A gritty, stream-of-consciousness thing 😕 - but so far I‘m surprisingly totally absorbed.

squirrelbrain The covers are bizarrely similar...🤷‍♀️ Enjoy your long reading weekend! 😘 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain They are, aren‘t they? Dark with circles is obviously a Thing! Have you got the weekend off, Helen? Hope you get a break for this one! 😘 3y
squirrelbrain I‘ll be working some of it Rachel (payroll year end and financial year end) but not all weekend.... Hoping to get lots of reading in as well! 3y

rockpools @squirrelbrain 🙁. Enjoy the reading bits and hope the rest of it goes smoothly! 3y
rockpools @BookwormM I‘ve just been on a little spending spree 😁 & bought 3 of them. That‘s it now - everything else will have to wait til the library comes good. Just have to read the things now!! 3y
BookwormM Well done guessing my library orders will arrive next week 🤞 3y
Simona I‘m currently reading ... and it‘s also NF book! 3y
rockpools @Simona I‘ve just read this, which strikes me more NF than Historical Fiction. It‘s all a bit weird. 3y
Simona Yes, I saw that too. It‘s very unusual and I must say, that I‘m a little bit disappointed with the selection ... 3y
