Certain Girls: A Novel | Jennifer Weiner

Readers fell in love with Cannie Shapiro, the smart, sharp-tongued, bighearted heroine of Good in Bed who found her happy ending after her mother came out of the closet, her father fell out of her life, and her ex-boyfriend started chronicling their ex-sex life in the pages of a national magazine. Now Cannie's back. After her debut novel -- a fictionalized (and highly sexualized) version of her life -- became an overnight bestseller, she dropped out of the public eye and turned to writing science fiction under a pseudonym. She's happily married to the tall, charming diet doctor Peter Krushelevansky and has settled into a life that she finds wonderfully predictable -- knitting in the front row of her daughter Joy's drama rehearsals, volunteering at the library, and taking over-forty yoga classes with her best friend Samantha. As preparations for Joy's bat mitzvah begin, everything seems right in Cannie's world. Then Joy discovers the novel Cannie wrote years before and suddenly finds herself faced with what she thinks is the truth about her own conception -- the story her mother hid from her all her life. When Peter surprises his wife by saying he wants to have a baby, the family is forced to reconsider its history, its future, and what it means to be truly happy. Radiantly funny and disarmingly tender, with Weiner's whip-smart dialogue and sharp observations of modern life, Certain Girls is an unforgettable story about love, loss, and the enduring bonds of family.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ . Cannie‘s daughter joy is 13 and prepping for her bat mitzvah. Navigating teen social scene she discovers a book her mom wrote right after having her that leads to many questions. Cannie and Joy narrate as thier relationship becomes fraught. Great descriptions of the bat mitzvah competitive scene. Overall, Cannie is less fun than I expected and the book much sadder. wished there was more Maxie Rider. An enjoyable listen

LauraBeth @MarriedtoMrT 🤔 Neither! Instead let‘s channel our emotions about this into supporting more women authors. 👊 (edited) 6y

LauraBeth @RaimeyGallant you can include “breeding hips” in yours. Or just the word breed somewhere... 6y
TheWordJar I think her voice being “unpleasantly audible” may be my favorite part. I do ❤️ Jennifer Weiner. 6y
saresmoore This is awesome. Please tell me a book by Jennifer Weiner to read! 6y

shutterbug_mama After I graduated college and moved to NJ (commuting to NYC for work) she was the author that got me back into reading for pleasure! I‘ve read 8 of her books. Someday I‘d like to go back and reread the earlier ones. (In Her Shoes, Good In Bed, and Little Earthquakes were my favorites.) 6y
Megabooks 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 6y
LauraBeth @shutterbug_mama I had a similar experience with her when I was commuting from Hoboken to NYC. I‘d purposefully take the bus instead of the path because it gave me longer reading time. I have very fond memories of reading this author during my commutes. 😀 6y

Day 21 #riotgrams Not #badcovers because they‘re ugly but because they‘re a pet peeve: where‘s the rest of their faces? @bookriot

DivineDiana That is annoying! 6y
MallenNC @DivineDiana I'm not sure if they do it to be dramatic or if the idea is the reader might see herself if there's no face, but it's completely overdone! 6y
DivineDiana I think you‘re right! 6y

This is the second book I've read by Jennifer Weiner and I enjoyed this book as much as the last one. I like how she alternated the chapters between mother and daughter were you get a real sense of emotions and connection.

#riotgrams day 13 - #pinkcovers

I'm not at home, so this was a smidge more challenging than it would have been. Luckily, my Goodreads list reminded me what pink covers I've read recently. Side note, Jennifer Weiner's Certain Girls made me ugly cry so hard.

[DELETED] 57804897 I thought the nanny book was good 7y

Why did this book have to take a turn and get depressing?? Well more depressing. Not enjoying this one anywhere near as much as the first book.

I read this sequel to Good in Bed years after, and it's a much different book than I expected. It's an chick lit, as the other book was, but this is something much deeper that deals with difficult issues like death and parenting and family dynamics. It had funny moments, but was a serious book.
