As the sequel to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, armless Aven is leaving the ease and comfort of middle school to begin the journey of the high school experience, and wishes she could be homeschooled…

Shockingly, I liked this book much better than the first one. It was funnier and felt with more deep stuff. But, I have to say, a girl with no arms started a band, and she didn‘t call it Armageddon. 4.5⭐️

This was a sweet sequel to the first book about a determined heroine Aven. She was born with no arms but she doesnt let that stop her or her spirt. In the first book, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, she deals with moving to a new town. In this book she deals with moving on to high school, bullies, school dances where she is dreading them playing the YMCA and overcoming her fears. Sarcastic kids with big hearts steal mine every time.

I really enjoyed this sequel to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. I loved revisiting the characters I fell in love with in the first book, and following Aven as she enters high school. This one explores some heavier themes as Aven navigates a bigger school & comes up against some cruel bullying. There‘s wonderful depth and a refreshing lack of teen drama—rather a focus on meaningful relationships & learning to love who & where you are.

Sometimes the friends you make aren‘t the ones you expected. And sometimes the place you find yourself in isn‘t the place you were hoping for. And sometimes, if you keep an open mind, you‘ll find they‘re so much better than what you imagined.

☹️I didn‘t read any of View from the Cheap Seats or Thirst this week

Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus was one of my top 5 books of 2018- I loved it so much that I read it to both of my 6th grade book clubs and have convinced probably a dozen students since then to read it. The sequel didn‘t quite live up to my expectations, although it was still very good. I laughed and I cried, but never had that “OMG This is the best book ever” feeling.

Anybody else remember prancercising?! I‘m not sure any of my middle school students would get the reference, but it definitely made me giggle!
