Mobile Library: A Novel | David Whitehouse
From the award-winning novelist David Whitehouse, hailed by The New York Times as a writer to watch, a tragicomic adventure about a troubled adolescent boy who escapes his small town in a stolen library-on-wheels. An archivist of his mother, Bobby Nusku spends his nights meticulously cataloging her hair, clothing, and other traces of the life she left behind. By day, Bobby and his best friend Sunny hatch a plan to transform Sunny, limb-by-limb, into a cyborg who could keep Bobby safe from schoolyard torment and from Bobbys abusive father and his bleach-blonde girlfriend. When Sunny is injured in a freak accident, Bobby is forced to face the world alone. Out in the neighborhood, Bobby encounters Rosa, a peculiar girl whose disability invites the scorn of bullies. When Bobby takes Rosa home, he meets her mother, Val, a lonely divorcee, whose job is cleaning a mobile library. Bobby and Val come to fill the emotional void in each others lives, but their bond also draws unwanted attention. After Val loses her job and Bobby is beaten by his father, they abscond in the sixteen-wheel bookmobile. On the road they are joined by Joe, a mysterious but kindhearted ex-soldier. This puzzle of people will travel across England, a picaresque adventure that comes to rival those in the classic books that fill their library-on-wheels. At once tender, provocative and darkly funny, Mobile Library is a fable about the intrinsic human desire to be loved and understoodand about one boys realization that the kinds of adventures found in books can happen in real life. It is the ingenious second novel by a writer whose prose has been hailed as outlandishly clever (The New York Times) and deceptively effortless (The Boston Globe).

Well… this was not the ‘book about books‘ I was expecting when the title caught my eye at the library! Comes with a lot of trigger warnings, a really heartfelt story about found family.

Two days left in 2019, and three books left to finish. I‘ve got this!

Let me take this opportunity to gush about the #Leio App for iOS. I‘ve used the paid version for the past two years and I love being able to track and plan my reading this way!

LiteraryinLawrence I‘ve never heard of Leio. I‘ll have to look into it! 4y

“I was strongly worried about growing old in a country of non-readers.”

What a great story. Saw it in the Culture section of BBC.com.

I‘m not quite sure about this. It‘s not really about books. And in some parts it‘s really tragic, but I felt like the language didn‘t fit the perspective of the little boy, from which this story is told.

Social outcast Bobby is bullied at school & ignored & abused at home. He meets & befriends developmentally disabled Rosa & her mother Val. Val invites Bobby over for dinner & to borrow books from the mobile library she cleans & organizes for work. After she loses her job & a series of events endangers Bobby, they take off in the mobile library. Whitehouse writes of abuse & other dark themes that temper what could have been too mawkish. A great 👇

vivastory book about trauma, choosing your own family & the power of books. 6y

"There is no such thing as an ending," she said. "Good things come out of bad things and bad things come out of good things, but it always continues. It's as in life. Books are life. There is just the part you read. They start before that. They finish after it. Everything carries on forever. You are only in it for those pages, for a tiny window of time."

Both heartbreaking and heart warming. Bobby, a young friendless boy embarks on a journey both in real life and through the books he discovers. Expertly written to show the understanding of a young mind, Whitehorse captures the love and need of adventure perfectly.

This book unsettled me. Like the characters in the story, I misunderstood the relationships between Bobby, Val and Rose. I appreciated how highly books were valued in their lives providing means of escape. I felt a sense of uncertainty while reading that did not disappear at the abrupt ending. As so many characters mentioned, "life has no ending:it just keeps going"; it felt like the story kept going beyond the last page.

As the saying goes, killing 2 birds with one stone. (Although I would never condone killing a bird, or two. I love all animals, except snakes. I digress.)
Anywho, this is my reading spot. As you can see, it is occupied. This is Munchkin - she is my reading buddy, and my general shadow. I have 3 other pets, but they requested no photographs, please.
This is also the next book I'm starting. That is all.

This was such a great and heart-warming read that I'm even more than ready to overlook a few plotholes (like which icecream van is open at sunrise on a late autumn day?). 😊 It's a book about the power of imagination, the crippling effects of grief, the overwhelming feelings of parental love and the influence of books. I loved the characters, the different settings, the wonderful imagery. ❤️
