Poe-Land: The Hallowed Haunts of Edgar Allan Poe
Poe-Land: The Hallowed Haunts of Edgar Allan Poe | J. W. Ocker
16 posts | 8 read | 38 to read
Winner of the 2015 Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical! Follow the footsteps of the father of American horror fiction. Edgar Allan Poe was an oddity: his life, literature, and legacy are all, well, odd. In Poe-Land, J. W. Ocker explores the physical aspects of Poes legacy across the East Coast and beyond, touring Poes homes, examining artifacts from his lifelocks of his hair, pieces of his coffin, original manuscripts, his boyhood bedand visiting the many memorials dedicated to him. Along the way, Ocker meets people from a range of backgrounds and professionsactors, museum managers, collectors, historianswho have dedicated some part of their lives to Poe and his legacy. Poe-Land is a unique travelogue of the afterlife of the poet who invented detective fiction, advanced the emerging genre of science fiction, and elevated the horror genre with a mastery over the macabre that is arguably still unrivaled today.

Like most people, I was introduced to Edgar Allan Poe in high school. Honestly, I kind of left him in high school…until I met my husband who is a ginormous Poe fan and has been for as long as he can remember. My husband reintroduced me to Poe‘s work and had me reading poems I had never read and rereading poems I had forgotten. #MountTBR

Poe lovers - you have to read this book! Ocker writes of his year long trek searching for Poe all over the world. What he finds, and doesn‘t find, brings him closer to Poe. He tells his tale with humor, and this has really made me want to get in my car and visit Poe haunts. Very enjoyable! This also fits the #travelogue prompt for #LRC . #LRC2018

Exbrarian Not to be confused with Poland 🇵🇱😁 5y
Librarybelle @Exbrarian 🤣🤣🤣 Though, I‘d be interested in reading a travelogue through Poland! 5y

A rare #caturday morning...life has been way too busy to just enjoy a lazy morning. Even rarer, a #Vladimir picture! #catsoflitsy

Sace 😍 6y
ErinGoBragh1011 I love that your cat's name is Vladimir. It reminds me of a vampire 6y
Librarybelle Thanks, @ErinGoBragh1011 ! I was reading Russian literature when I adopted him, but, if you‘re a big, he has a side to him that reminds me of Vlad the Impaler. 😹 6y
ErinGoBragh1011 @Librarybelle lol that was actually my first thought but didn't want to offend so I went with my second thought lol 6y
Librarybelle @ErinGoBragh1011 Ha! I‘ve had more people ask if he was named after the current person in charge of Russia than anything, which is definitely not the case! And I have no idea what happened during my previous response, but autocorrect made part of it very nonsensical. 6y

This passage right away made my heart flutter. Such a poetic interpretation of Poe‘s works, and such a fitting interpretation.

Most of what we know about Poe the man is possibly fabricated. Yes, Poe did marry his 13 year old cousin...that much is true. But, the heavy drinking and drug use...the world first learned of this from Poe‘s first biographer, a rival author and reviewer who thought he was better than Poe, so rushed to do a smear campaign. Well, it backfired - I can‘t even remember his name! Thus, a #stupidman #SeptemberDanes

Tagged book I plan to read in October!

Librarybelle I should say too that it is evident in Poe‘s writing that he was troubled. He did drink, and he did experiment in drugs. But, to the extent his first biographer stated? Probably not, but who knows? 6y
Reviewsbylola That‘s such a gorgeous cover! 6y

Today marks the anniversary of Poe's death, which, much like his macabre works, is shrouded in mystery. I chose this for the #soullesssaturday prompt because of Poe's macabre and gothic tales, his way of thinking outside of the box, so to speak. Ocker visits Poe's haunts in this travelogue, to better understand Poe's genius. I'm hoping to read this book plus The Poe Shadow before the end of October! #hallowreads

Kaye Oooh. This looks really good. Love the cover. ❤️ 7y
Librarybelle I love the cover too, @Kaye . I enjoyed the author's travelogue to Salem that came out last year...I think I'll like this one too! 7y
Kaye Thanks for mentioning the author‘s other book. I might just order a couple books today. Look out charge card. I might just melt it before the day is done. 7y

I live in an area rich in history. Rumors abound that just about every historical figure spent the night in an old house either in town limits or just outside of town - let's just say George Washington spent his entire life sleeping in houses all over South Central PA!

Poe is rumored to have visited many a place. In this book, Ocker visits actual places Poe stayed and visited. #iheardarumor #augustgrrrl

Cinfhen Apparently George Washington slept in a local tavern down the street from my old house 🏡 7y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I think it's fun to hear all the stories of Washington and Lafayette (another one busy visiting every house in PA). It makes for great folklore (and even better when there's proof that the event occurred)! 7y
Lmstraubie Hey Old George slept by me also! 7y

Poe had lots of issues, though his first biographer, a so called "friend," fabricated a lot of stuff in the name of jealousy. But, we do know Poe dabbled in recreational drugs and alcohol...full extent unknown. And, basically every woman he ever loved died of consumption. Coker, who did well exploring Salem, takes readers to Poe's homes up and down the East Coast. It's #getawaysgonewrong because Poe has a tragic legacy. #sizzlinsummerbooks
