Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons | Kris Newby
10 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
A riveting thriller reminiscent of The Hot Zone, this true story dives into the mystery surrounding one of the most controversial and misdiagnosed conditions of our timeLyme diseaseand of Willy Burgdorfer, the man who discovered the microbe behind it, revealing his secret role in developing bug-borne biological weapons, and raising terrifying questions about the genesis of the epidemic of tick-borne diseases affecting millions of Americans today. While on vacation on Marthas Vineyard, Kris Newby was bitten by an unseen tick. That one bite changed her life forever, pulling her into the abyss of a devastating illness that took ten doctors to diagnose and years to recover: Newby had become one of the 300,000 Americans who are afflicted with Lyme disease each year. As a science writer, she was driven to understand why this disease is so misunderstood, and its patients so mistreated. This quest led her to Willy Burgdorfer, the Lyme microbes discoverer, who revealed that he had developed bug-borne bioweapons during the Cold War, and believed that the Lyme epidemic was started by a military experiment gone wrong. In a superb, meticulous work of narrative journalism, Bitten takes readers on a journey to investigate these claims, from biological weapons facilities to interviews with biosecurity experts and microbiologists doing cutting-edge research, all the while uncovering darker truths about Willy. It also leads her to uncomfortable questions about why Lyme can be so difficult to both diagnose and treat, and why the government is so reluctant to classify chronic Lyme as a disease. A gripping, infectious page-turner, Bitten will shed a terrifying new light on an epidemic that is exacting an incalculable toll on us, upending much of what we believe we know about it.

#AudibleDeal 🎧🔬🦠🦟 Kris Newby, and her husband were unknowingly bitten by a tick on vacation in Martha‘s Vineyard. They quickly experienced fevers, aches, extreme brain fog and debilitating fatigue which lead to a harrowing yearlong battle to seek answers and receive treatment. Frustrated by the medical community, Kris began researching tick bites and Lyme Disease which brought her to the discoveries of scientist Willy Burgdorfer.👇🏽

Cinfhen Burgdorfer hinted that the current Lyme disease outbreak may be the result of a bioweapons experiment gone awry. A truly shocking story and expose of the US Government‘s biochemical warfare department in the 1950‘s & 60‘s using insects as carriers of lethal warfare.
Told through a first person narrative this book was fascinating and surprisingly accessible.

I‘ve been looking forward to this for awhile. To say it‘s been hell trying to get treatment my Lyme disease would be an understatement. I‘ve been misdiagnosed and ignored by my family doctor. I‘ve had to seek alternative treatment, which my insurance doesn‘t cover. My tin foil hat has been on for awhile now, so I‘m excited to see what evidence this author provides.

Suet624 I have Lyme too. It‘s been 5 years of treatment and I can say I‘m finally feeling good 90% of the time. If you ever need to vent, my email is Suet624 at gmail. 4y
BarbaraBB I hear this so often about Lyme and wish you all the best 🍀. Also I am happy to hear that you are doing so well @Suet624 💚 4y

StephBengtson @BarbaraBB Thank you, Barbara! 💚 4y
Nute Many many prayers for you, Stephanie and Sue, @Suet624. I have also heard how tough the road for treatment and to recovery for Lyme Disease can be and then the added stress of misdiagnosis. I hope for increasing numbers of well-days for both of you brave lovely individuals. Take Care!💕 4y
StephBengtson @Nute Thank you! That‘s so sweet. 4y
Suet624 @Nute Thank you so much for your kind words. My 35-year-old daughter just found out she has Lyme now. It‘s hard knowing that she‘s in for a long haul. Just a nasty bacteria. 4y

They didn't follow through with this plan, not because it was evil, but because they simply didn‘t think it would work.

The perfect incapacitating agent was one that made a large percentage of a population moderately ill for weeks to months. The illness it caused would have to be hard to diagnose and treat and under the best circumstances, the target population shouldn't even be aware they'd been dosed with a bioweapon. This would make it easier for invading, vaccinated soldiers to take over cities and industrial infrastructure without much of a fight.

I recently read an article in Newsweek about how Congress is investigating whether or not the United States government created Lyme Disease to be used as a biological weapon. This should be a HUGE news story, but I guess it doesn't get covered due to the daily scandals of the Trump administration. Kris Newby has written a book about this, which I have just started reading.

Mommamanzi That‘s really scary. 5y

Suet624 Did they actually admit it? I thought they were just investigating it. 5y
keithmalek @Suet624 Whoops. You're right. Either way, they did indeed create this disease. I changed my original post. 5y
Suet624 The damage inflicted on a person's body, the years of misdiagnoses, the amount of money spent to try to get some relief because, of course, insurance pays for 1% at best of the expense, is unimaginable. One of my daughters has now been diagnosed with Lyme as well. I've not wanted to believe it was the government's fault because it wouldn't help me in my recovery to be angry at “them“. But 5 1/2 years into treatment, I'm pissed. 😖 5y
keithmalek @Suet624 There's a very disturbing line in here about how most of the deaths caused by Lyme aren't from the disease itself, but from the resulting suicides that result due to some of the problems that you just mentioned. 5y
Suet624 That's the truth. I'm in some Lyme groups and memorials are often posted of those who have given up in despair. 5y

Fascinating and highly-readable book about Lyme disease and its potential as a Cold War biological weapon.
