Vinegar Hill | A. Manette Ansay
7 posts | 18 read | 12 to read
In a stark, troubling, yet ultimately triumphant celebration of self-determination, award-winning author A. Manette Ansay re-creates a stifling world of guilty and pain, and the tormented souls who inhabit it. It is 1972 when circumstance carries Ellen Grier and her family back to Holly's Field, Wisconsin. Dutifully accompanying her newly unemployed husband, Ellen has brought her two children into the home of her in-laws on Vinegar Hill--a loveless house suffused with the settling dust of bitterness and routine--where calculated cruelty is a way of life preserved and perpetuated in the service of a rigid, exacting and angry God. Behind a facade of false piety, there are sins and secrets in this place that could crush a vibrant young woman's passionate spirit. And here Ellen must find the straight to endure, change, and grow in the all-pervading darkness that threatens to destroy everything she is and everyone she loves.

Pickpick

Personal heartbreak is seen through the eyes of multiple family members, but it is Ellen (wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law) at the center of the story. Ellen is a good woman trying to find her place as she feels suffocated by religious and misogynistic forces in a small town of the 1970‘s. Realistic and ultimately hopeful, the writing is excellent.

Recently I have been tackling the books listed on Oprah‘s Book Club. This is the third book I‘ve read. Oprah should provide a free box of tissues with every book listed in her club. I enjoyed this book. Different but a great read. 5/5

audiobooklover Listening to the audio version...so far good! 5y

This was a decent story but I didn't get enough from it. Not a bad read overall, good break between heavier books.

#bookhaul! One from Amazon, three from Goodwill, (for a grand total of $6) and one from my 76-year-old Latvian friend, complete with meaningful inscription. #bookfession : I've not ever read anything by a Bronte, nor have I experienced "On The Road." September is going to be sweet!

StacksNShelves "On the Road" is great, even if it isn't my favorite Kerouac. Hope you enjoy the road trip. 8y
