Far from Fair
Far from Fair | Elana K. Arnold

Odette Zyskowski has a list: Things That Aren’t Fair. At the top of the list is her parents’ decision to take the family on the road in an ugly RV they’ve nicknamed the Coach. There’s nothing fair about leaving California and living in the cramped Coach with her parents and exasperating younger brother, sharing one stupid cell phone among the four of them. And there’s definitely nothing fair about what they find when they reach Grandma Sissy's house, hundreds of miles later. Most days it seems as if everything in Odette’s life is far from fair. Is there a way for her to make things right? With warmth and sensitivity, Elana K. Arnold makes the difficult topics of terminal illness and the right to die accessible to young readers.

Whoa, this little book packed an emotional punch I was not expecting. I read it in one sitting and cried my eyes out at the end. Loved it. Bonus: There is a chapter that takes place in Old Town Sacramento. Talk about a strong sense of place for me.

(Quarantine book #31; checked off the "tear-jerker" box on my reading challenge.)

Life‘s unfair in so many ways.
Odette‘s parents sell their home, buy an RV, and hit the road, leaving everything she knows behind. First stop, Grandma‘s house, where Odette has to face the realities of life head on.
A #MiddleGradeMarch book that reminds you of all the tough times middle grade books get kids through and the lessons they impart.

A message for our times. Sometimes you forget how powerful middle grade books can be, the life lessons imparted, the things they help kids get through.

Leftcoastzen That was a gift my mom gave me . She always told me the truth about a situation to me when I was a kid . Age appropriately worded of course. 4y

Some dogs get you your slippers in the morning. The best bunnies get you tissues when your book makes you cry.

The ocean. Cookies. First crushes. A cross-country road trip. A big, ugly RV. A small, ugly dog. An intelligent discussion of the "death with dignity" issue. What's not to love? Just make sure you've got your tissues handy.

"Darlings," Grandma Sissy said. Her voice was wobbly but she smiled at them. "Darling darlings."

I lost my grandmother this past year - my strong, crazy grandmother (who called me her "darling"). This book is really hitting home.

This is a photo of me and my grandma on my wedding day, with my husband and my not-so-little brothers. ?

Mackypup Beautiful photo. 7y

monalyisha @vivastory It's true. And it's actually even better now. He's got a righteous gray wizard streak that's gotten brighter over the past year. 🔮 7y
vivastory @monalyisha I have serious beard envy, especially with a streak 7y

"Peekaboo views of the ocean popped up here and there, but even when Odette couldn't see the water, there was a knowledge of it, all around, encircling them."

Always thankful to be a transplant in the Ocean State. I may not be a native Rhode Islander, but my heart crashes against my chest like waves against the shore.
I've got the sea in me. ??

"It was a full-size coffeemaker, even in their pint-sized kitchen, because Odette's parents "believed" in coffee."

Perfect first day of summer read that had me up past my bedtime last night. Sweet, funny, but unflinching when it comes to difficult subjects. I loved it.

Then Rex said, "Well, it's your soul, after all. Why shouldn't you untie it, if it's ready to go free?"
