THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SECOND NOVEL FROM THE WRITER EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL (STATION ELEVEN) CALLS SHARP, WITTY, AND IMMENSELY ENTERTAININGIs a new life possible? Because Shira Greenes life hasnt quite turned out as planned. Shes a single mom living withher daughter and her gay friend, Ahmad. Her PhD on DantesVita Nuovahasnt gotten her a job, and her career as a translator hasnt exactly taken offeither. But then she gets a call from aNobel Prize-winning Italian poet who insistsshes the only one who cantranslatehis newest book.Stunned, Shira realizes thatjust like that her lifecan change. She seesa new beginning beckoning:academic glory, demand for her translations, and even love (her good luck has made her feel more open to theentreaties of a neighborhood indie bookstore owner).Theres only one problem: It all hinges on the translation, and as Shira starts working on theexquisitely intricate passages of the poets book, she realizes that it may in fact be, well ... impossible to translate.A deft, funny, and big-hearted novel about second chances,Good on Paperis a grand novel of family, friendship, and possibility. From the Hardcover edition.

If you put an ex in a story, give him a small you-know-what and make him impotent. He'll never say it was him! No one gets sued!

#AprilBookShowers Title with "good"

Not sure why I haven't rated this one before, but it's a recent read that I feel deserves more love. Great vacation read.

As the title says "good on paper." Shira just kind of floats through life. Then a job opportunity forces her to evaluate it, and she has the choice to make changes or stay the same. Many Dante references and poetry types.

This one was denser than I expected, and wow--it was a great read. So much to say about forgiveness and new beginnings, and I really liked all the parts about language. Now I feel like I oughta queue up some Dante on the Serial Reader app.

You know that thing where you're just starting a new book but you accidentally read the blurbs for the author's previous book first and then you get like, weird book envy because you think there's a pretty good chance you'll really like the previous book, which is not the book you've got? 🤔

Anyway, this A Highly Unlikely Scenario book is going on the tbr list.

Well-ReadNeck I haven't read the previous book, but really enjoyed 8y
Sfox414 @Well-ReadNeck now that I've actually started it, I'm liking it too, so far--although I'm only about 50 pages in 😀 8y

Mehso-so

I stuck this one out, but never really got into it. The middle section was best; it was the most heartfelt and grounded, whereas the rest felt a little showy and false. I've been looking forward to this book for a while, so I was a little disappointed.

I put GOOD ON PAPER at the top my stack of recently acquired books, but I'm not loving it. There's A LOT of Dante in this book, and he was never my fave.

Liberty Those are all amazing! 🤘🏻 8y

This would make a solid book club choice. I disliked the main character, and found her relatable. The story was compelling, but not as emotionally involving as I'd thought it would be.
