Lie with Me
Lie with Me | Sabine Durrant
Twisty, tense, impossible to put down psychological suspense for fans of I Let You Go and The Widow. It starts with a lie. The kind we've all told - to a former acquaintance we can't quite place but still, for some reason, feel the need to impress. The story of our life, embellished for the benefit of the happily married lawyer with the kids and the lovely home. And the next thing you know, you're having dinner at their house, and accepting an invitation to join them on holiday - swept up in their perfect life, the kind you always dreamed of... Which turns out to be less than perfect. But by the time you're trapped and sweating in the relentless Greek sun, burning to escape the tension all around you - by the time you start to realise that, however painful the truth might be, it's the lies that cause the real damage... ... well, by then, it could just be too late.

I stumbled on this book on my Kindle for$3.99. I‘ve read others that were inexpensive and could see why. This was a surprise. Paul, the MC and narrator is not above lying to make himself look better. Without stumbling into spoilers, he gets involved with a family that may just be his match

The narrator‘s a loathsome character. An awful man, a womaniser, and a frequent liar. White lies, exaggerated lies, unnecessary lies..just to paint a good picture of himself. Soon he is caught in his own web of lies. I was able to guess some of the things, but am impressed with the twist and neat plotting. And unexpectedly, felt a tinge of sympathy for the a*#h%le character at the end. A nice summer read but not gripping or suspenseful enough.

TheFunkyBookworm Ohh you‘ve caught my interest! 6y
Jess7 I think it sounds good too. I purchased it on kindle the other day. Author Clare Mackintosh gave it a rave review. It‘s described as fitting the hole left after books like Gone Girl and Girl on the Train @TheFunkyBookworm 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @Jess7 I‘m always a little leery of books using gone girl as their advertising hook bc so far I have yet to read a thriller that measures up to that twist! 6y

Jess7 Agreed @TheFunkyBookworm - but it did get rave reviews from Clare Mackintosh. Her books are really good! 6y
RadicalReader @Jess7 love the plot of this book!! Instantly added it to my TBR pile so glad I‘m not the one who has to fill the inter library loan request I just fill out the information for the ones I want 6y
LKK526 Nothing is like Gone Girl but Gone Girl. I am leery too. Lie With Me has enough to keep your attention. Sometimes it‘s fun to suspend disbelief 2y

Despite most of the characters being unlikeable I really enjoyed this book. The main character appears to be a pathological liar and I liked how the plot twisted and kept you reading. In the end I actually felt a little sorry for him. I‘m going to keep an eye out for more books by this author.

I have to admit feeling very let down and disappointed in this book until the end section. For some reason it did not really engage me and I can't say I ever really grew to like the main character. Having said that it does get very interesting and very psychological towards the end.

Andrew65 @TrishB Hope I didn't put you off, as I say I enjoyed the ending. 7y
TrishB No -I'll still get to it! It just didn't race it up the pile 😀 7y

LIE WITH ME is a part of the amnesia/psychological thriller genre that relies on unreliable characters or some sort of distorted memory necessary to confuse and disorient the reader. Apart from some pretty impressive character development, Sabine Durrant created a clever and morally complex novel that I read in just one night and that is, indeed, impossible to put down.

There's a review on the front cover which says the book grabs you and never lets go and it's not wrong! At just under 300 pages, it's not a long story, but so much happens. The main character is not particularly likeable, he's not a hero, but you do wonder what he's getting himself into and how on earth he'll get out of it and then, how other people can be so cold and heartless. A great read!

Starting on this at lunchtime, can't remember what made me pick it up and the inside cover blurb is intriguingly vague, but I bet that means it'll be good!

A sneaky and subtle riddle. Absolutely amazing the way Durrant play with feelings and impressions. The story starts slow but then halfway through it get faster and the situation, which initially seems clear and obvious, is completely turned around. The plot is perfectly planned, the characters amazingly developed. Highly recommended!

Unique plot, not one likeable character but all are intriguing. Some say it's a slow start, maybe, but worth it for the jaw dropping ending
