The Last Good Girl
The Last Good Girl: A Novel | Allison Leotta
16 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 16 to read
From Allison Leotta, the highly entertaining storyteller (George Pelecanos) who writes in a style thats as real as it gets (USA TODAY), a ripped-from-the-headlines novel featuring prosecutor Anna Curtis at the center of a national story involving campus rape and the disappearance of a young woman. It was her word against his...until she disappeared. Emily Shapiro has gone missing. A freshman at a Michigan university, Emily was last seen leaving a bar near Beta Psi, a prestigious and secretive fraternity. The main suspect is Dylan Highsmith, the son of one of the most powerful politicians in the state. At first, the only clue is pieced-together surveillance footage of Emily leaving the bar that night...and Dylan running down the street after her. When prosecutor Anna Curtis discovers a video diary Emily kept during her first few months at college, it exposes the history Emily had with Dylan: she accused him of rape before disappearing. Anna is horrified to discover that Dylans frat is known on campus as the rape factory. The case soon gets media attention and support from Title IX activists across the country, but Annas investigation hits a wall. Anna has to find something, anything she can use to discover Emily alive. But without a body or any physical evidence, shes under threat from people who tell her to stop before she ruins the name of an innocent young man. Inspired by real-life stories, The Last Good Girl shines a light on campus rape and the powerful emotional dynamics that affect the families of the men and women on both sides.

The first half was hard to get into, maybe because I've never read any of the other books in the series. However, I flew through the second half.

Decided we were having sandwiches tonight for dinner so I didn't have to interrupt my #readathon. Turkey, ham and provolone plus a good book is my idea of a good time! #springcleaningreadathon

#titlewithgood Anna Curtis is a prosecutor dealing with sex crimes. A Good Killing tells about Anna's sister. The Last Good Girl is Leotta's fifth book. #aprilbookshowers

It's spring break? My daughter had a meeting with someone and her cars in the shop so I'm chilling in dining while waiting for her to get done.

Bks4Wrms By any chance is that at Marquette University? 7y
CocoReads I imagine there's a lot more snow at Marquette but it's at IU South Bend. (Lucky enough that our city has an IU satellite campus. But there's never any actual spring like weather for spring break. ❄️❄️❄️ 7y
Bks4Wrms @CocoReads The campus looks a lot like MU in Milwaukee, WI. Yes, there is probably more snow but not as much as in Marquette, MI! ❄️☃❄️☃ (Wasn't sure if we were talking about the same Marquette ☺️) 7y

CocoReads I was t sure either but I think it's safe to assume MI has the most. For about 30 seconds many years ago I thought about going to school up there but in the end wound up going nowhere and it probably wouldn't have been my best idea. 7y
Aseleener I graduated from an IU satellite campus. IPFW in Fort Wayne. That's my home city. 7y
CocoReads @Aseleener what a small world! One of my cousins is at IPFW! 7y

This page turner of a mystery/thriller tackles the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. I couldn't put it down even though parts of it angered me.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I think I already have this one. Know it is part of a series I've not started. Maybe I'll take a leap out of my comfort zone and read it 'out of order'! 😳 8y

#FunFridayPhoto I couldn't readily think of a favorite book w/ a college setting so I'll go w/ a recent one set at fictitious Tower University in Michigan. This 5th book in the Anna Curtis series has federal prosecutor Anna leading an investigation into the disappearance of a female student, last seen in surveillance footage w/ the rich frat boy she accused of rape. Not a fun book, but an absorbing one. With my usual Friday coffee shop breakfast.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I read a couple of good reviews of this one. Nice pick! 😀 8y

Finished the audiobook while making dinner. This legal thriller was low tension & mostly well plotted. I like thrillers that can carry off a social issue, and this was successful in that regard. My first time with the series, but I didn't feel lost in terms of the characters' back stories. 3.5 stars. Audio: I usually like Gilbert as a narrator, but her performance felt rushed. Regardless I'd read Leotta again

tpixie I want your recipe!!! 8y

Tonight's audiobook. Love that it's set in Michigan and on a college campus. Interesting characters and I have a feeling that there'll be some twists.

brendanmleonard Excited to eventually read this. Key word being "eventually." 8y
LitHousewife I'll have to check that out. I love books set in Michigan and Tavia Gilbert is so good! 8y

BethFishReads @subwayreads omg -- driving, cooking, gardening, cleaning house, fitness walking, while getting dressed etc in the morning -- all the dang time 8y
DebinHawaii I liked it. I'm a fable of the series & I think this was one of the stronger books in it. 👍 8y
subwayreads @BethFishReads mmm I've been trying to start listening to audiobooks but I lose focus. Im halfway through Yes, Please by Amy Poehler and even though I love it, I honestly listen to the parts twice to get it through my head. Any tips? 8y
subwayreads @BethFishReads I've never been good at just listening - in class I have to takes notes or I'll zone out and such 8y
BethFishReads @DebinHawaii this is my first. I may have to read the others 8y
BethFishReads @subwayreads it's a learned skill. In class I was a crazy note taker too. The trick with audio is to be doing something else or you'll just fall asleep: crafts, dishes, computer games. 8y

5th book in Anna Curtis series-a favorite legal/crime thriller series. Timely in-the-news subject-campus rape & privileged perp-but handled well. Would suggest reading the series in order but also would hand this book to any young adult headed to college for info on campus sexual assaults provided.

bookchickdi I met Allison at BEA two years ago, she was very interesting. 8y
DebinHawaii @bookchickdi That's cool. I really like the series-- the character & all the legal information. ;-) 8y
