Thirty-Three Teeth
Thirty-Three Teeth | Colin Cotterill

Dr. Siri Paiboun, one of the last doctors left in Laos after the Communist takeover, has been drafted to be national coroner. He is untrained for the job, but this independent seventy-two-year-old has an outstanding qualification for the role: curiosity. And he does not mind incurring the wrath of the partys hierarchy as he unravels mysterious murders, because the spirits of the dead are on his sideand a little too close for comfort more often than he would like. With the help of his newly appointed secretary, the ambitious and shrewd Dtui, and Mr. Geung, the Down Syndromeafflicted morgue assistant, Dr. Paiboun performs autopsies and begins to solve the mysteries relating to a series of deaths by what seem to be bear bites, to explain why the government official ran at full speed through a seventh-story window and fell to his death, and to discover the origins of the two charred bodies from the crashed helicopter in the temple at Luang Prabang. As it turns out, not surprisingly, not all is peaceful and calm in the new Communist paradise of Laos.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Dr. Siri Paiboun series. The characters are great, the plot is fast-moving and I'm learning about Laotian culture (albeit that of the 1970's when this story is set).

TiredLibrarian I love this series! 10mo
kwmg40 @TiredLibrarian I've only read the first two but I definitely plan to pick up the next one in the series! 10mo

I enjoy this series. Dr. Siri's irreverent humor toward #Laos Communist bureaucratic paperwork tickles me. I also like how the spirit world helps Dtui and he solve crazy murder mysteries. On to Book 3.

#AwesomeApril seems to be full of ‘WHAT did I just read?!‘ reads.

1976. Dr Siri, the national coroner of #Laos, investigates what appear to be some killings by bear, with the help of spirits, puppets and his morgue assistants.

These are really enoyable reads, if more a little out-there!

BarbaraBB This does sound intriguing! 3y
squirrelbrain What @BarbaraBB said - sounds fascinating! 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB They‘re quite fun reads, in a supernatural, cosy-ish, bit-of-Laos-history with fab characters and ludicrous plot kind of way! Got a bit dark towards the end, though. (And of course one day I will actually read something by a Lao author!) This is the first in the series 👉: 3y

Butterfinger I'm so glad I saw this post. Just last night I was thinking of a doctor in Vietnam (I thought) that I enjoyed about two years ago. Couldn't remember title or author. As soon as I saw Coroner's Lunch, I knew. Serendipity!!! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 3y
Cinfhen Ohhhhh, I might try this for #Laos xx thanks for posting & sharing 💕 3y

For today's #backtoreading, I have been enjoying #FollowTheClues with Dr. Siri and his colleagues during 1970s Laos. Colin Coterill does a fantastic job of creating an intricate web of characters and giving a sense of what the beginning stages of communism looked like in Laos. Also, there is a spiritual/supernatural component to the books which I love. These are fun mysteries without too much of the gore. Loving the series so far. Rec'd by my mom!

emmaturi I have read one in this series! Enjoyed it! 7y
