The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt
The Last List of Miss Judith Kratt: A Novel | Andrea Bobotis
16 posts | 7 read | 26 to read
Judith Kratt inherited all the Kratt family had to offer--the pie safe, the copper clock, the murder that no one talks about--and she knows in her old bones that it's time to make an inventory of her household and its valuables. But she finds that cataloging the family belongings--as well as their misfortunes--won't contain her family's secrets, not when her wayward sister suddenly returns, determined to expose skeletons that the Kratts had hoped to take to the grave.Interweaving the present with chilling flashbacks from one fateful evening in 1929, Judith pieces together the influence of her family on their small South Carolina cotton town, learning that the devastating effects of dark family secrets can last a lifetime and beyond.

May 1989

Whenever I hear a train‘s horn in the distance, that bruised sound, I think of Quincy. He spent half his days down at the depot, true enough, but it‘s the nature of the sound that reminds me of him, how it‘s at once familiar and remote.

I needed some good old Southern historical fiction in my life. As Judith Kratt inventories family heirlooms, she shares each items‘ story, unraveling long kept family secrets. For a debut novel, this was excellent and I‘ll be watching for more from this author.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I loved this one! Thought it was great!! 4y

4.5 ☆ I love a great Southern family drama. As luck would have it this is the authors first novel so of course I knew I had to read it. Two timelines with love, family loyalty, coming-of-age, adultery, racial tensions, lies, murder and cover-ups.
If you enjoy historical Southern stories don‘t pass this one up!

Chelsea.Poole Sounds good! 😊 5y

I used to hate hate hate Southern fiction, and now I'm totally fascinated by it. This is set in South Carolina and it felt really authentic to my small town experiences there. It has a compelling family mystery, which reminded me a lot of my beloved We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but the modern sections weren't as emotionally engaging as they wanted to be.

MaleficentBookDragon It's interesting how our tastes change. After much forced Dickens in high school, I refused out of hand to read anything by a British author for a very long time. Now I read A LOT of British fiction and watch BBC series all the time. I'm a bit obsessed. 😄 5y
Caterina Ohhh I LOVE We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and I grew up in SC. Would you recommend this despite the so-so rating? 5y
AmberWB Hi @ferskner ! I have you for the #summersantagoespostal swap! However- your address wasn‘t in the email I got! If you could email it to me, that would be great! 97lion@gmail.com 5y
ferskner @MaleficentBookDragon I know! I love to think about the catalysts to change our tastes. Mine was definitely my move to the South and suddenly understanding just how unique it is from the rest of the country. 5y
ferskner @Caterina I think overall, yes. I don't think I would have cared without the SC element, so that might appeal to you too. Where did you grow up? I lived in Beaufort for about 6 years. 5y

I'd planned on taking a long audiowalk this afternoon to enjoy the gorgeous Tennessee weather, but my chronic headaches strike again. Instead, I'll admire my not-yet-planted herbs and tomatoes and read this book for work.

Librarybelle I hate headaches! Hope you feel better soon! 5y
ferskner @Librarybelle Thank you! Unfortunately it's a nearly daily occurrence for me but I waited too long to take my medication for it. Bleh. 5y
ScientistSam Oh no! Hope you feel better! 5y
Daisey Sorry about the headache, but the herbs look great! 5y
ferskner @ScientistSam @Daisey Thank you!! You're both so sweet. 5y
