Truth as Told by Mason Buttle
Truth as Told by Mason Buttle | Leslie Connor
From the critically acclaimed author of Waiting for Normal and All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook, Leslie Connor, comes a deeply poignant and beautifully crafted story about self-reliance, redemption, and hope.Mason Buttle is the biggest, sweatiest kid in his grade, and everyone knows he can barely read or write. Mason's learning disabilities are compounded by grief. Fifteen months ago, Mason's best friend, Benny Kilmartin, turned up dead in the Buttle family's orchard. An investigation drags on, and Mason, honest as the day is long, can't understand why Lieutenant Baird won't believe the story Mason has told about that day. Both Mason and his new friend, tiny Calvin Chumsky, are relentlessly bullied by the other boys in their neighborhood, so they create an underground club space for themselves. When Calvin goes missing, Mason finds himself in trouble again. He's desperate to figure out what happened to Calvin, and eventually, Benny. But will anyone believe him?National Book Award Finalist * ALA Schneider Family Book Award * 2019 ALSC Notable Children's Book * Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2018 * 2019-2020 Nebraska Golden Sower Award * Amazon Best Books of 2018 * Kirkus Best of Children's 2018 * New York Public Library Best Books 2018 * Chicago Public Library Best of the Best Books 2018 * 2018 Nerdy Book Club Middle Grade Winner

(2018) Mason Burke is a middle schooler with learning disabilities dealing with bullies, grief, and the cop who suspects Mason is responsible for the death of his own best friend. He is also utterly charming. Extra points for (spoiler!) a dog of my favorite literary breed: the Dog-that-survives-the-entire-book-hound. It's a rare breed but (attention authors!) the *best*

Thanks @mandarchy for recommending this one!

Texreader I ❤️ your description of the dog! 2y
mandarchy I'm glad you liked it. Such a great author! I love the name of this dog breed. We need more of these 🐕 🐶 dogs ❤️ 2y

Great book! Loved the “neurodiverse protagonist.” It would take way too long to tell you everything I love about this book, so I‘m just going to say it‘s one that will tug at your heartstrings and stay with you for a long time. ❤️ #MiddleGradeMarch #DoubleSpin

10/10 Excellent read, definitely a good book while travelling as the time you spend reading it disappears in a blink. I quickly became emotionally invested in the characters, and was pleased how it ended

Differently-abled Mason Buttle is nothing if not honest. He recently lost his Grampa, then his Mom, and finally his best friend Benny, who mysteriously fell from an apple tree on Buttle property. Mason tries hard to sequence his story and express himself to the adults...
Great story and characters

Mason Buttle is a kid that you just want to hug. His dyslexia and social awkwardness make him a target for bullies. He is further ostracized when his bed friend dies in his family‘s apple orchard. I loved this book and it‘s way of highlighting the humanity in differently abled people.

It‘s absolutely wild seeing your mom mentioned in the acknowledgements of a book you‘re reading. 😂

A pick with reservations. Lots of bullying and a very sweet young man combine to create a Freak the Mighty – type story.
