Tigerman
Tigerman: A novel | Nick Harkaway
A KIRKUS REVIEWS and NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A WASHINGTON POST AND ALA NOTABLE BOOK Sergeant Lester Ferris is a good man in need of a rest. After a long career of being shot at, hes about to be retired. The mildly larcenous, backwater island of Mancreu is the ideal place to serve out his time, a former British colony in legal limbo, belching toxic clouds of waste and facing imminent destruction by an international community concerned for their own safety. The perfect place for Lester is also the perfect location for a multinational array of shady businesses. Hence the Black Fleet of illicit ships lurking in the bay: spy stations, arms dealers, offshore hospitals, money-laundering operations, drug factories and torture centers. None of which should be a problem, since Lesters brief is to sit tight and turn a blind eye. Meanwhile, he befriends a brilliant, Internet-addled street kid with a comic-book fixation who will need a new home when the island dies. When Mancreus fragile society erupts in violence, Lester must be more than just an observer: he has no choice but to rediscover the man of action he once was, and find out what kind of hero the islandand the boywill need. From the award-winning author of Angelmaker and The Gone-Away World, Tigerman is a novel at once deeply heartfelt and headlong thrillingabout parenthood, friendship and secret identities, about heroes of both the super and the everyday kind. From the Hardcover edition.

As with the other Nick Harkaway novels I‘ve read, this was a great concept but not a casual read. It required a bit of time to get into.

December 2021 #BookSpinBingo is a “books I‘m borrowing from my family” edition.
#BookSpin: Tigerman, by Nick Harkaway (my brother has this because I bought it for him 😂)
#DoubleSpin: a non-fiction history book (likely one of my mum‘s)

TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, I love your theme! I also have multiple books from multiple siblings sitting around here! 2y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks I‘m heading down to my parents‘ place next week and working from there because I couldn‘t be there for Christmas last year. So all of the books on my list are either ebooks or ones I know they have 😂 2y

I can‘t remember rooting so heavily for a protagonist as much as I did for Sergeant Lester Ferris. The story is full of nutty, interesting characters and a plot that somehow felt both breezy and complex at the same time. I didn‘t love the ending, but I begrudgingly admit it works. This book was a wild ride that‘s “full of win” but that‘s left me feeling completely exhausted! 4/5 - I‘ll definitely be reading more by Harkaway in the future.

TheAromaofBooks Also a fabulous cover! 3y

I read Angelmaker in 2014. I loved it despite not being as focused as I needed to be to understand all of it. I've been meaning to re-read someday. But this book was available at the digital library, so I'm going off my reading plan to explore an author that really intrigued me.

How cool that I can order a beer at a book reading? (Not here for this author, but it's what I'm reading on my Kindle as I wait.)

#autobuyauthor #marchintoreading Harkaway has only published three books as far as I am aware and I am eagerly awaiting the fourth. Funny insightful and oddball fantasies with heart.

"Tigerman is full of win!" This sentiment, expressed by the main character's young friend, pretty much sums up my feelings about this very unique novel. It's not quite a superhero story, not entirely a spy thriller, and has elements of satire as well as a strong environmental message. It's smart and funny and touching and yes, full of win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chocolate bars should not take on new identities. They should be content with who they were.

For an island with no future, Mancreu had a great deal of present.

"He struggled through the next morning because there were things to do, things which couldn‘t wait a day however awful he felt. He got up. It wasn‘t pleasant."

This quote pretty much describes my life since Tuesday night. Not sure when, or if, I'll start feeling normal again. But until I do, at least I have books.

Matilda I feel the same way. 7y

I was going to make my next read a Doctor Who book, but after a slew of horror and science fiction I decided what I really needed was something that didn't fit into any specific genre. This one's been on my 'to read' pile for almost two years, and it seemed like it could be exactly what I was looking for. Just a couple chapters in so it's too early to say if it was the right decision or not, but so far I'm enjoying it.
