quote

"I was this close to making it home but must have fallen asleep and nearly wiped out on the mountain road. Instead of driving off the cliff, I smeared blue paint all along the retaining wall and had to ditch my car there. I figured one day I‘d tell my kids, "See that? Your pops drew that.""
-"Fuerdai to the Max"

quote

"Theirs was a Chinese love. It was not about making each other happy. It was about sacrifice. It was a love devoted to suffering for the beloved. They were supposed to sacrifice over and over again for each other, each getting a turn to give up something he or she did not want for the other, until one of them died."
-"Mott Street in July"

I often struggle with short stories but I really liked these. Maybe bite sized stories are easier to handle when your concentration is shot! Or maybe it‘s that these stories felt like they had some closure.
The protagonists are Chinese millennials, some living in the USA as first or second gen citizens. I really liked the modern, urban settings and the varying ways the characters were disconnected or had lost purpose. ⬇️

Centique Each story was quite different from the one before, some quiet and melancholy while others were frenetic. The imagery was strong throughout and has stayed with me for days. As have the questions some of the stories pose. 4y
Cathythoughts Great review! I love the sound of the strong imagery , stacked 4y

The spirit of these stories are 21st century Chinese youth with less baggage and more autonomy than their parents, whether they are in China (Beijing mostly) or elsewhere.

This was another story collection from the Tournament of Books longlist. My favorite stories were the first one, the title story, and the divers.

Centique This sounds so appealing to me. I saw the quote from it you posted on Instagram too. Can I rebel from my TBR and jump into this?? Hmmmm.... 😝 4y
ReadingEnvy @Centique you could just sneak a story from this in between your current reads 4y
Centique @ReadingEnvy that is good thinking! 4y

5/5🌟 What an amazing collection! These 12 captivating stories center around the Chinese millennial experience. But its about so much more than that. Themes of love, family, death, identity, reckless youth, and belonging.
This was an emotional for me. Her prose are remarkably beautiful, her characters are deep and well written. Every story had a distinctly different voice. She's is a brilliant storyteller!

Not so much in a reading slump as I am working all the time right now and am exhausted. Working on multiple titles right now. Hoping to pick the pace back up again soon.

A wonderful collection of short stories about Chinese citizens in the "new" China, immigrants, Chinese Americans (first and second generation), family, love, ambition (or lack thereof), desire, and the way that life seems to spin out of our control. Beautiful sentences. Though some stories seem to just end, like we need a few more paragraphs to get a good conclusion. The beginnings are all fabulous; Wang really knows how to draw the reader in.

This debut collection blew me away!!! The stories are about Chinese millennials (both in China and around the world) and it‘s got all the great short fiction stuff: beautifully drawn scenes and characters; twisty plots; weird premises. My favorite stories were: Vaulting the Sea, Echo of the Moment, and Future Cat. #netgalley
