Asperger's Syndrome
Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals | Tony Attwood
2 posts | 1 to read
Tony Attwood's guide will assist parents and professionals with the identification, treatment and care of both children and adults with Asperger's Syndrome. The book provides a description and analysis of the unusual characteristics of the syndrome and practical strategies to reduce those that are most conspicuous or debilitating. Beginning with a chapter on diagnosis, including an assessment test, the book covers all aspects of the syndrome from language to social behaviour and motor clumsiness, concluding with a chapter based on the questions most frequently asked by those who come into contact with individuals with this syndrome. Covering the available literature in full, this guide brings together the most relevant and useful information on Asperger's Syndrome, incorporating case studies from the author's own practical experience as a Clinical Psychologist, with examples of, and numerous quotations from people with Asperger's Syndrome.

Can anyone recommend any good books on children with Aspergers/high functioning (low care needs) autism please?? 🤔

Mdargusch Possibly @Reviewsbylola can recommend some? 5y
Reviewsbylola Let me scrounge around and see what I can come up with. 5y
CampbellTaraL Also, check out the #ActuallyAutistic tags on Twitter/Instagram/YouTube for great resources from and by ASD people. 5y

Reviewsbylola Neurotribes is the one that sprang to mind for me too. ⬆️ It‘s very comprehensive. Otherwise I normally read memoirs relating to ASD. 5y
Reviewsbylola Today I‘m reading a few books to my daughter‘s class about ASD. One that I‘m reading is 5y
Reviewsbylola But I take it you‘re looking for adult books that talk about kids on the spectrum? 5y
Weaponxgirl @taraWritesSci I think that‘s a great book too. 5y
Weaponxgirl I haven‘t read any books on the subject yet but I recently did a course in intensive interaction and that is something that will probably be quite intuitive to a lot of people in a lot of ways. It can be tailored to the individual and I‘ve found that a great way for making connections with children on the spectrum. 5y
Caroline2 @Reviewsbylola Thank you! I‘ll check out the book and the tags. Is there any memoirs you would particularly recommend?? 5y
Caroline2 @taraWritesSci oh thanks, I‘ll check them out. 👍🏻 5y
Caroline2 @Weaponxgirl that sounds interesting, keep an eye out, thank you. 5y
Reviewsbylola One I just read was great, although the brothers it focuses on are definitely more low functioning. 5y
Caroline2 @Reviewsbylola Thank you, I‘ve stacked them all. I‘ve heard this is good too but I haven‘t read it yet 5y
Reviewsbylola That‘s on my TBR! 5y

#disabilityreads These are the books I read most often after my son‘s diagnoses in the 80‘s/90‘s.
Asperger‘s Syndrome was given to me by my son‘s pediatric neurologist when Aspergers was seldom heard of. It proved to be a vital tool as my son was the 1st hands-on student in his school district. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder particularly Aspergers.

CBee Tammy - I am always seeking other parents who have children on the spectrum. My youngest is autistic (he‘s 5). Would you be open to emailing with me occasionally? 5y
tammysue @CBee Of course, I would enjoy that Cydney! 5y
Tamra I love the way Litsy makes connections! 💚 5y

tammysue @Tamra It‘s amazing here isn‘t it! 😊 5y
CBee @whatshesreadingnow great! So thankful ♥️ 5y
CBee @Tamra 100% agree!!! ♥️😁 5y
maleahrae My son has the same two diagnoses! Only now Aspergers is called ASD Level 1, so that's his official diagnosis. My younger sons teacher recently mentioned screening him for ADHD, too. @CBee 5y
booklahoma I really enjoyed the book In A Different Key. My nephew is on the spectrum and is a wonderful kid. 5y
CBee @maleahrae hi 👋🏻😁 it always helps me to connect with others who get it! If you ever want to email a bit, I‘m game! ♥️ 5y
CBee @booklahoma I added that one to my TBR. Thank you 😊 5y
vkois88 We had these as well when my brother was diagnosed 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
kspenmoll I was lucky enough to go a a conference of Tony Atwood‘s in Boston years ago. He was fabulous. What a journey if your son was diagnosed in the 80s. My son‘s diagnosis came a decade later. While not the first( what trailblazing & I imagine immensely challenging for your family) in his elementary school he was the 1st but not in the district. 5y
tammysue @booklahoma Thanks for the recommendation, I‘ll check and see if my library has it. 💛😊 5y
tammysue @vkois88 ❤️🤗 5y
tammysue @kspenmoll I felt very fortunate to have the amazing teachers he had. We worked closely together throughout his schooling sharing ideas and especially having the support I did from them! It meant so much and I‘ll forever be grateful to them all. ❤️ 5y
booklahoma @CBee @whatshesreadingnow In case anyone is wondering, In A Different Key is fairly recent so it is "spectrum-aware." It includes stories, info, and research across many ASD variants. 5y
tammysue @booklahoma I put it on library hold today. Thanks so much! 😊 5y
