Roaming the Mediterranean Sea on sailboats and hunting down monsters is the only life seventeen-year-old Indi and his siblings have ever known. He never loved it, but now that his parents are gonevanished during a hunt three months agoit's harder and harder to fight his desire to escape. He's constantly battling his ferocious love for his siblings and the temptation of his parents' journal, which contains directions to a treasure that their parents hinted at. Maybe it's something valuable enough to distract Beleza from her mission to hunt down the monster that killed their parents. Something that would take the little kids away from the sea that's turning Oscar into a pirate and wasting Zulu's brilliant six-year-old mind. Something that could give Indi a normal life. Acclaimed author Hannah Moskowitz has reinvented yet another genre in this ridiculously propulsive epic that is part seafaring epic, part coming-of-age tale, and a totally warm-hearted story of a boy who loves his family and just wants to figure his own self outif only the fate of the world weren't on his shoulders.

I‘m getting my oil changed and tires rotated, so I started reading this while I wait. I‘m so mature, I when I read this little exchange, I snort laughed and got some funny looks! My maturity issues aside, I‘m pretty impressed with how smoothly Moskowitz has set up her world building, and the relationships between these young siblings in such a short span. I‘m only 10 pages in and I‘m already hooked! Also, I‘m loving the aesthetics of this book!

Pickpick

I deeply appreciate Moscowitz‘s ability to craft small narratives set in the larger world. In SALT, our narrator is 17yo Indi who has been fighting sea monsters across the Mediterranean with his three siblings (18yo Beleza, 10yo Oscar, & 6yo Zulu) since their parents disappeared on a monster hunt. This book was almost a casualty in my recent #readersblock but I‘m so glad it wasn‘t because it‘s lovely.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • #YA #fantasy-ish
