Harbour Street
Harbour Street: A Vera Stanhope Mystery | Ann Cleeves
14 posts | 17 read | 6 to read
Harbour Street is the next spellbinding installment in Ann Cleeves' series of crime novels about Vera Stanhope, played in the TV detective drama VERA by Brenda Blethyn. As the snow falls thickly on Newcastle, the shouts and laughter of Christmas revelers break the muffled silence. Detective Joe Ashworth and his daughter Jessie are swept along in the jostling crowd onto the Metro. But when the train is stopped due to the bad weather, and the other passengers fade into the swirling snow, Jessie notices that one lady hasn't left the train: Margaret Krukowski has been fatally stabbed. Arriving at the scene, DI Vera Stanhope is relieved to have an excuse to escape the holiday festivities. As she stands on the silent, snow-covered station platform, Vera feels a familiar buzz of anticipation, sensing that this will be a complex and unusual case. Then, just days later, a second woman is murdered. Vera knows that to find the key to this new killing she needs to understand what had been troubling Margaret so deeply before she died - before another life is lost. She can feel in her bones that there's a link. Retracing Margaret's final steps, Vera finds herself searching deep into the hidden past of this seemingly innocent neighborhood, led by clues that keep revolving around one street... Why are the residents of Harbour Street so reluctant to speak? Told with piercing prose and a forensic eye, Ann Cleeves' gripping new novel explores what happens when a community closes ranks to protect their own-and at what point silent witnesses become complicit.

4/5
Number 6 in the Vera series, it's actually the first book of the series I read, and it can definitely be read as a standalone.
I liked the atmosphere of this mystery book, even if I would have liked the end to be longer, perhaps it would have seemed less rushed...
Overall, a solid plot which kept me guessing until the end.

After not particularly loving the last book in this series I was a bit wary about this one but after a slow start I was pretty engrossed.

Another good read in this series. I never had an inkling about the killer. So sure it was someone else!

LeahBergen I remember watching this episode. 👍 2y

Another great read in the Vera Stanhope series. I especially like how she gets us into the headspace of different characters as the mystery develops and it‘s especially interesting to see Vera through the inner thoughts of the suspects and her detectives.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wish I‘d read this just a little bit sooner because of the pre-Christmas setting. But it was still good. I still relate very hard to Vera‘s not wanting to be stuck doing boring supervisor stuff 😂

#RedRoseSeptember #day6 #ChippyTea DI Vera Stanhope is extremely fond of a chippy tea, even though she‘s supposed to be on a restricted diet for her health. You‘ll often find her sitting on a bench with a paper cone of chips and maybe a piece of battered fish to go with them. I must give the challenge creator a shoutout, you almost had me stumped for this one!👏👏👏

arlenefinnigan Hehehehe. It is a bit niche, isn't it 😉 5y

First mystery read of the new year, the January 2019 selection for my Monday Morning Mystery book group at the library. My first outing with Ann Cleeves (aside from loving the “Shetland” TV series).

Slow start to this book, although the pace does pick up a bit. The ending was a little predictable but the solid writing makes up for this.

On to the next Vera !

laurieluna A guy I studied drama with was in an episode of this on TV! He was questioned by Vera while playing pool. Only episode I've ever watched but I enjoyed it. Maybe need to read more crime thrillers! 6y
Katiesbookishlife @miralunasbooknook I really want to watch the series now, my local library has the set but I‘m just waiting until I finish all the books first so there are no spoilers! I‘m not a huge fan of crime novels but these Ann Cleeves books I have found really enjoyable, I think partly because they don‘t really delve into the minds of the killers which I find disturbing and frightening instead they just focus on the investigation. 6y

#AugustGrrrl #day21 #NeverGiveUp DI Vera Stanhope has a bulldog-like tenacity, when she gets hold of something, she never gives up until it's beaten & lying bleeding at her feet. If you're ever in trouble, Vera is the copper you want on your side, she'd never rest until you got justice. But if you're the one doing causing the trouble, if you see her coming I'd run the other direction sharpish & never come back! Giving up is not in her vocabulary.

Cinfhen I've NEVER seen u repeat a book!!!! You're amazing 🙌🏻 7y
Jess_Read_This I'm obsessed with the tv show! I just started watching and can't wait to read the books! 7y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen it's coming close to where I'll have to I think. Unless I keep buying more books. Reckon I can use that excuse on the hubby? I had to buy them dear, I needed them for the photo challenge.🤔 @Jess_Read_This I love the show, Brenda Blethyn is an awesome Vera, but the books are so much better! The new one is released in a few weeks, already have it pre ordered!👍 7y

#bookisholympics #book10 And book ten is done.I love the Vera Stanhope series,it reminds me a lot of Columbo, another detective who's underestimated but always comes out on top. Margaret Krukowski is found dead on the metro by Detective Joe Ashworths daughter.Vera heads to the coastal town the victim lived in,but finds everyone lying to her. Then another woman dies and it's a race to find the killer. I wonder if I can get book11 in before midnight?

Dragon I've seen the tv show but hadn't realized it was based on a book series. Yay a new British mystery series to read👏 8y
Lizpixie @Dragon you definitely should. Once again, even though the tv series is fantastic, the books are so much better📖 8y
Dragon Thanks @Lizpixie I'm going to watch for them at the next booksale 8y
Lizpixie @Dragon The Crow Trap is the first book, it's fantastic! 8y

#bookisholympics #bookten I decided to go with Vera for my tenth book. Dark Matter was so deep & twisted I thought I good old fashioned murder would be the best palate cleanser!😋 Detective Joe Ashworth & his daughter are on the train when he realizes the woman in the corner isn't breathing. No one saw the murder happen, though the train was full. DI Vera Stanhope goes to quiet Mardle to investigate, but locals are clamming up. #goingforplatinum🏅

[DELETED] 2232195534 Wanted to tell you to go with Vera before! Yay! I got to meet Ann Cleeves this spring. I'll have to do a blurb about and show a picture. She is an amazing advocate for libraries! 😀 8y
Lizpixie @kaysreadinglife oh lucky you! I love both her Vera & Shetland books, and I love the Tv series for both. Brenda Blethyn makes a terrific Vera & the scenery in Shetland blows me away.🇬🇧 8y
