SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Great movie! Used it in a HS creative writing class to prompt writers to create unconventional narrators. Love the metacommentary on fiction as well. 2y

If you're someone who likes the enemies-to-lovers trope, activism within a novel, constant allusions to Greek mythology, or simply cheesy high school romances, this book is for you!

Tell Me How You Really Feel | Aminah Mae Safi

The theme is the idea of what it means to trust and be emotionally vulnerable with someone. It expresses this idea through alternating viewpoints as the two main characters become more comfortable with each other and move away from their awkward past. It also includes the idea of understanding someone and shows the girls to be a character foil of one another. A subplot follows the theme of pursuing love and your dreams simultaneously. 2/3

This YA novel set in LA follows an enemies-to-lovers high school romance between two girls, Rachel and Sana. After a misunderstanding, the two become high school nemesis, but they are forced to work together on Sana's film project, a modern retelling of “Helen of Troy“. Through their forced cooperation, the two rediscover old feelings for each other as they try to navigate high school struggles as they both work towards their dreams. 1/3

This was a fun romance. Sana and Rachel are in their senior year of high school and they‘ve been at odds since nearly the beginning. Now Rachel needs Sana for a film project to keep her place at film school, and after an accident and a mix-up, Sana feels like she owes her.
As they get to know each other they find more than expected, and it could be they were meant for each other since the beginning.

[#BookReview] Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi. This was such an amazing enemies to lovers story about a lesbian couple and I am so glad I picked it up. Rachel and Sana go through so much personal character development and I absolutely loved seeing that growth while reading. I highly recommend this one!

I love going to my local library. It‘s the only place in my suburb I consistently see other people who read as queer. And even if I didn‘t see them, I‘d know they‘re around because they are always on top of cool queer new releases I find out about through other Littens! I had a stressful medical week(just-to-be-careful mandatory ER visit, everything was fine), and I‘m looking forward to reading in a bath while this little goober knocks things in.

The threads of this story came a bit unraveled towards the end but I still enjoyed it. It‘s a very LA tale both with the locales & ethnic callbacks. I kept thinking Harvard-Westlake as the stand-in prep school because how many schools have a film department?

I admit this book did make me a little sad as my inner little girl always wanted the opportunity to grow up in this environment & with these opportunities.

Lineup for the #SummersEndReadathon starting tomorrow. Lots of ARCs (which I don‘t log on here tbh) & some playing catch-up.

Clwojick This stack looks awesome! Can‘t wait to see what you think of that Camilla Way novel. I believe I have that on my #TBR 5y

This is not the first time in this book that people over 30 are referenced to as "the olds". ?
Clearly I'm not the target audience.

StayCurious How old is the author I wonder? 5y
Zelma I can‘t find an answer but she looks young. 5y
readingjedi I'm not sure if I find that offensive or hilarious! 5y
Sleepswithbooks She would be referring to a group of me as “The Graveyard Walking Crypts.” 5y
BookFreakOut I'm 28 and I imagine I'll be as unpolished in my 30s as I am now! 😆 5y

This is a hate to love story based on a misunderstanding where, in their freshman year, Rachel thinks Sana asked her out as a prank. Unfortunately, the characters are two dimensional with a storyline written so I don‘t care about them. Yes the cover is lovely and provides a great picture of Rachel and Sana, but a cover can‘t carry the entirety of a book. In the end, we as readers are left disappointed, with a forgettable story.

Mehso-so

I wanted to adore this, and I did enjoy it well enough, but it wasn‘t the amazing experience for me that it was for some. Cute & sweet at times, but the writing was rough on a technical level, repeated names and unnatural dialogue. Enemies-to-lovers trope was not fleshed out, felt thin & rushed. I like a queer story where no one has to struggle w/it, and the filming parts & Sana going for her dream were good. But overall I just wanted more. 3/5 ⭐️

I am generally enjoying this book (although jeez, I‘m almost halfway through and these girls still haven‘t progressed beyond where the relationship was at the start) but the writing is an issue, particularly the author‘s overuse of names. No reason at all why Rachel‘s name had to be used three times here. It should have just been the first mention and then pronouns after that. This is consistent throughout and I‘m wondering where the editor was...

Texreader I normally prefer reusing the name for clarity. But I agree with you here. It would have been clear with the pronouns and instead the use of the name slows the flow. Hmmm 5y

An absolute gem of a book, ispired by Rory Gilmore & Paris Geller. Sana & Rachel have been "enemies" ever since Sana tried to ask the new girl out & Rachel assumed this gorgeous girl could only be doing it as a joke. But now Rachel needs Sana as the lead in her student film which means the two are forced to spend time together. Witty banter, enemies to lovers, & general adorableness ensues. Head over heels in love with this one.

Lived up to the hype. If you want something with Gilmore girls vibes, this is perfect for you even better you get a satisfying ending where the show never did give you. Plus diverse and is a queer love story. Loved every second of this story.

Parts of this #YA I loved, and others I feel iffy about. Two seniors at a fancy prep school, one a future doctor with rich grandparents and a "have-to-be-perfect-daughter" complex and the other a scholarship recepient and filmmaker with a huge chip on her shoulder. Loved: enemies-to-lovers, sometimes unlikable girls, and ethnic/religious diversity. Didn't love: rushed ending and how the author seemed to deliberately avoid the words gay/lesbian/etc
