“Detritus” (deh-rih-tuss), “cerulean” (crew-lean), & “coherent” (which someone gleefully told me I was pronouncing like “herring” 🐟) were probably my biggest offenders! Apparently, I sometimes transposed letters? 🤷♀️ And liked fish?
(Also, as a really young kid, I had absolutely *no* idea what to do with “colonel.” 😅)
#wordproblems
BookNAround I used to pronounce treacle as tree-ackle. Not sure why my kid brain didn‘t sound the word out but, I didn‘t and was only corrected by a laughing colleague when I was in my late twenties. 6y
MelissaSue81 I remember not being able to tell the difference between Precious and precocious as a young reader. I can‘t remember what else I pronounced wrong, but my 10 year old has LOTS 6y
Kimberlone Until my first year of college I thought “queue” was pronounced “kwee” 🤦🏻♀️ 6y

Lucy_Anywhere I pronounced subtle as sub-tul for far longer than I want to admit! 6y
kgriffith detritus! 6y
LeahBergen Ennui! I‘d only ever read the word as a teenager and pronounced it “en-you-EYE”. 😆😆 6y
monalyisha @BookNAround @MelissaSue81 @Kimberlone @Lucy_Anywhere @LeahBergen Omg I love all of these! Especially “queue”/“kwee.” 😂 6y
monalyisha @kgriffith Twins! 👯♀️ 6y
cobwebmoth Skewer. I pronounced it SKOO-er. 6y
ravenlee As a kid I used “ah-KA-zhu-ries” for accessories, and thought unanimous started like unhappy. Neither lasted long, but long enough! 6y
audraelizabeth Worchestershire I still struggle with 6y
monalyisha @audraelizabeth Haha. I grew up in “Worcester.” That particular one is in my wheelhouse. 6y
audraelizabeth The name hilda was another one for me 6y
paulfrankspencer Bivouac. Somehow I said "bio-vac" in my head until I confused my father and made a fool of myself the fateful day I said it out loud. 6y
monalyisha @paulfrankspencer I don‘t think I‘ve ever had cause to say “bivouac.” Clearly I‘m not having the right kind of conversations. 😆 6y
paulfrankspencer @monalyisha let me lower your opinion of the type of conversation I'm having: 6y
paulfrankspencer Me: know what's a cool word? Bio-vac. Dad: huh? Me: defines it. Dad: you mean bivouac? Me: ... 6y
Kimberlone @monalyisha ten years later and my college friends still bring this up! 6y
monalyisha @paulfrankspencer I appreciate that! Thank you. 😂😂😂 6y
rabbitprincess I pronounced "assuage" as "a sewage". My friend laughed for about ten minutes straight ? 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I thought “genre” was pronounced in a sort of French way, swallowing the R. French people probably don‘t say it like that either. 6y
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly Ha! So sophisticated. 🇫🇷 6y
monalyisha @rabbitprincess That‘s a good one! 😆 6y
inthegreensandblues @Lucy_Anywhere I didn't pronounce the B in subterfuge because I thought it was like subtle. 6y
monalyisha @inthegreensandblues That actually makes total sense. 🤷♀️ 6y
