Intimate stories of longing and exile by one of our finest contemporary writers. A lonely housewife fascinated with a famous writer learns to find her own voice in Abu Dhabi; a bus route passing the Christmas lights along Oxford Street is a stark reminder for a female passenger of her brothers tragic death on the eve of his wedding; and a Scottish man working in a kebab shop and his girlfriend try desperately to reconcile Islams place in their fragile relationship. From the heat of Khartoum at the height of summer to the wintery streets of London, from the concrete high rises in the Gulf to the blustery coast in Aberdeen, this elegant and moving collection vividly evokes the overlapping worlds of Africa, Britain and the Middle East. Beautifully observed and written with empathy, Leila Aboulelas stories deftly capture the search for home in our fast-changing world.

This is a collection of short stories linked by one subject - immigration. Variations on this subject are moving between loss of the home, searching for peace of mind in a new environment … to the racial impatience, the desire to belonged, losing touch with the traditional values … Very good collection, but as always with short stories - some are stronger than others.

Short story collection centered on immigrants from the Sudan, moving between Khartoum, Aberdeen and London. Their search for identity in a new home and the sorrow in leaving the old one behind.

I'm not a fan of short stories however being an expat the title appealed to me. Thirteen short stories on being Elsewhere Home. With them all being based in the UK and the Middle East I could really relate to them. The first one really touched me, I felt I was back in Egypt, I could almost smell it.

I enjoyed these stories, I felt the author really got to heart of the complicated mix of feeling you experience when your Elsewhere Home.

A collection of short stories highlighting the immigrant experience in Great Britain. The stories, although on a theme, we‘re quite varied in point of view, country of origin and story line. Likewise the success of the stories, in my opinion, varied quite a bit as well. Overall, a mixed bag. #netgalley
