'Charismatic and very more-ish' - Mark Lawrence, bestselling author of Red Sister 'Sixty-five thousand battle-shocked, trained killers came home to no jobs, no food and the plague. What did Her Majesty think was going to happen?' Tomas Piety takes his duties seriously: as a soldier, as a priest of Our Lady of Eternal Sorrows and as a leader of men. He has come home from the war to reclaim his family business, to provide for his men and to ensure the horrors of Abingon can never happen in Ellinburg. But things have changed: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg - his people - have run out of food and hope and places to hide. With his best friend Bloody Anne, his war-damaged brother Jochan and his new gang, the Pious Men, Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his. And as Tomas is dragged into a web of political intrigue by the sinister Queen's Men, forced to work against the foreign infiltrators lurking in the backstreet taverns, brothels and gambling dens of the Stink, one thing becomes clear. The war has just begun. 'Fans of Daniel Polansky, Mark Lawrence or, dare I say, Blackwing will most appreciate this book' - Ed McDonald, author of Blackwing

🎧 This is not what I expected. I should have read the summary or Mark Lawrence‘s BLURB! DUH!

This book is what would happen if Peaky Blinders & The Godfather had a Grim Dark Fantasy baby.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2+ 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Dark! Tomas comes back from a brutal war to find his criminal empire of organized crime has been stolen. This is going to be his story (told in first person) of how he gets it back. At times the story can feel one dimensional and repetitive but that‘s because it‘s being told with one character‘s voice.

If you can‘t make it through the first scene then this series isn‘t for you.

Just back from war & one of his x-subordinates is dragging an innkeeper‘s daughter off to … Tomas stops him. Or should I say, ends him. Tomas is a leader whether he‘s being paid to be one or not.

Tomas is damaged. Very damaged. But you learn why he‘s damaged.

His back story is filled in throughout the book & while I‘m not a fan of organized crime stories I like the character of Tomas. In a time where women & children were treated poorly he can sometimes feel like their champion.

The book starts out slowly setting the scene & cast of characters. The wild ride starts around the halfway mark.

This book contains violence, rape, child abuse. It‘s dark, gritty & vulgar. There‘s tons of swearing, adult language & situations.

Well written & narrated. I‘ll be reading the next book.

Actually, there were only three books planned, but now there are going to be four, and that's great! It wouldn't have done the story any good to have ended here. It would've been to much. Like this, McLean can develop his story the way I love it. This book is more plot driven than the others, while the first were centering Tomas and his thoughts. Now I of course can't wait for the fourth book, since there happened so much in volume three.

Grimdark is a subgenre of fantasy that I was previously unaware of and this example did little to endear me to it. The first person narrative is shallow & repetitive and the dialogue, character/relationship development, the plot itself and the quality of the writing were all amateurish. And the endless violence, indiscriminate murder & gallons of blood (pooling, spurting or spraying) got boring in its OTTness. If that's Grimdark, I'm out.

Lucy_Anywhere Can I suggest Joe Abercrombie or Mark Lawrence instead? They write great grimdark fantasy which is full of blood and violence but also shot through with humour which lightens the tone. And they are both great at creating complicated heroes 3y
Weisubei Abercrombie and Lawrence are top knotch in dark fantasy, love all of their books 😍 3y

Bookish Song Nr. 6: The Crazy Ones

Usually, it takes time to find a song to a book. But just like I had this “I have to read this“ experiance with Priest of Bones, it didn't take long until the matching song came up. Now I even have some kind of anime style video clip in my head, whenever this song is being played.

This week's check-in for #BFC @wanderinglynn I've finished two books this week, but not done quite so well with the yoga. Remote teaching is taking up a lot of my time and, as the head of the secondary, it's tough to manage the needs and expectations of students, teachers, and parents. I'm trying to get better at switching off at the end of the day and at weekends. Next week's goal is to turn everything off at 4 pm and do some yoga!

wanderinglynn It‘s hard to define a new normal, especially when the situation is so uncertain. That‘s a good plan to turn everything off at a designated time. 🙌🏻👍🏻 Schedule time to do your yoga. I put meditation in my calendar, so I get an alert when it‘s time. That way, I make it a priority just like any other work task. 4y
Meaw_catlady You‘ve got this! I only got 5 days out of 7 in my daily yoga. And I haven‘t finished any books. It‘s been hard to stay focused on my books. 4y

This book was instant love and it stayed. I loved every page. To me, it felt like Tomas was right next to me, telling me his story. I wanted to crawl into this book, even though I'd be lost in this though world. But still, it feels like nothing could happen to me if I stay around Tomas and his crew. This book is my first 5 star rating this year and definitely a highlight 💗 💗 💗

That cliffhanger, I want the 2nd book now. This was so gritty and dark, some elements might be to dark for some but it is things that do unfortunately happen but it does get dealt with, which was nice. Lots of death, swearing and dark material used in this series, politics with war and a bit of magic. First half is a little slow but the 2nd half picks up, its worth the build up!

Next library book to start is Priest of Bones. Looking forward to this one!

Slowly making my way through all the library books I have cuz I may have gotten 3 more today XD which brings my total to 17 books. And I was just told my library upped their checkout number to 60 items total, this is information I did not need as I could get carried away, haha.

Shley9225 How long can you keep your library books for? 5y
Sweetkokoro @Shley9225 We can keep them for 3 weeks and renew them up to 6 times, unless there is a hold request for them. 5y
Shley9225 @Sweetkokoro ohhh that makes sense I was wondering how you were going to get 17 library books done in a couple of days 5y
Sweetkokoro @Shley9225 haha yah there would be no way for me to get 17 done in a few days. I also already had to renew two of them since I got slammed with work the last week. But I‘m slowly getting through them haha. 5y

It‘s the first day of November and I‘m already 1000% done with this month and this year. Can we skip to 2019 already? This book is off to a pretty good start though. So I‘ll just bury myself in this until the universe decides to cooperate,
