"It took her a journey across the ocean to learn what she knew of love and fear and hate, but the essence of it came to her in an instant, as she succumbed to the churning black depths of the deep sea." Coralline is a shy mermaid in the Atlantic Ocean whose idyllic life is ruined by an oil spill that gravely sickens her little brother. Desperate to save him, she embarks on a quest to find a legendary elixir. She encounters a human man, Izar, who's left his life on land behind to find a cure for his dying father. He doesn't tell her that his family runs Ocean Dominion, an enemy corporation whose ships plunder her waters daily. Fate pushes the two of them together, even though their worlds are at odds. Accompanied by a colorful troupe of animals, Coralline and Izar travel through coral reefs and seabed cities, trailed by murderous adversaries and warring ships. Their secrets threaten to tear them apart, while a growing attraction adds to the danger. Ultimately, each of them faces an impossible choice. Should Coralline remain with the world she knows, including her fianc', or should she relinquish everything for a stranger who might betray her? And Izar holds a secret of his own--one that might cause him to lose Coralline forever. Magnificent and moving, set against a breathtaking ocean landscape, The Oyster Thief is an enthralling fantasy destined to become a classic.

Bailedbailed

I gave this one 100 pages, and couldn‘t keep going for almost 300 more. While I feel badly b/c it was given to me for review, I also don‘t. Faruqi‘s intentions are good, but she needed a stern editor to pull her back. The oceanic descriptions are meant to be interesting but overwhelmed me with detail and dullness. And I did not care for the characters in the least.

I started this yesterday, but was tired and kept falling asleep. I hope that‘s not an omen. So far, the writing isn‘t top notch but I‘m hoping for a strong story. #mermaids #underwaterfantasy #learnaboutouroceans

Jas16 I am so curious about this one. Looking forward to your review. 6mo
LauraJ The Jodi Picoult quote on the front is very noncommittal. 😹 6mo
readordierachel The cover sure is pretty. 6mo

BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraJ Right? I was taught that saying something or someone is “unbelievable” can get you out of lying to make someone feel better. This quote is nearly the same thing, I think. 6mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jas16 I‘ll try to remember to tag you! 6mo
BooknerdsLife Hope the book has gotten better for you 😅🙌🏼 LOL @LauraJ that‘s exactly what I thought after reading that quote 😂 6mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jas16 I‘m working on the review. But it‘s a DNF for me. I‘m happy to send it to you if you‘re curious to give it a shot anyway. 6mo
Jas16 That is so generous of you but I completely trust your opinion. 6mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jas16 Aww. No pressure for me, right? 😝 6mo

I know logically that taking a salt bath while reading a mermaid book won‘t turn me into a mermaid like Madison from Splash...but a girl can dream 💙🌊

Dolly 😂 That cup is gorgeous! 11mo

Pickpick

I really loved this book. I thought it was an original concept. Coralline is a mermaid 🧜‍♀️ set to marry her boyfriend in a couple of weeks. Then the unthinkable happens and her brother ends up gravely ill. With the help of her Whale shark best friend, Coralline sets off on a quest to find a magical elixir to save her bother.

This book is SO at the top of my TBR! I don‘t buy new books very often, but I may have to make an exception and ask for it this year for my birthday next month. Because I really want to read it!!!
