Girl Squads
Girl Squads: 20 Female Friendships That Changed History | Sam Maggs
20 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 32 to read
A fun and feisty tour of famous girl BFFs from history who stuck together and changed the world. A modern girl is nothing without her squad of besties. But don't let all the hashtags fool you: the #girlsquad goes back a long, long time. In this hilarious and heartfelt book, geek girl Sam Maggs takes you on a tour of some of history's most famous female BFFs, including: * Anne Bonny and Mary Read, the infamous lady pirates who sailed the seven seas and plundered with the best of the men * Jeanne Manon Roland and Sophie Grandchamp, Parisian socialites who landed front-row seats (from prison) to the French Revolution * Sharon and Shirley Firth, the First Nations twin sisters who would go on to become Olympic skiiers and break barriers in the sport * The Edinburgh Seven, the band of pals who fought to become the first women admitted to medical school in the United Kingdom * The Zohra Orchestra, the ensemble from Afghanistan who defied laws, danger, and threats to become the nation's first all-female musical group And many more! Spanning art, science, politics, activism, and even sports, these girl squads show just how essential female friendship has been throughout history and throughout the world. Sam Maggs brings her signature wit and warmth as she pays tribute to the enduring power of the girl squad. Fun, feisty, and delightful to read--with empowering illustrations by artist Jenn Woodall--it's the perfect gift for your BFF.

I really wanted to LIKE this. There‘s a lot of good information here - history that goes beyond white, wealthy women to feature girls/women from diverse eras of history and geographic locations. But the tone of the book kept putting me off. Normally, quippy and snappy would be a treat, but here I wondered who the intended audience was. It sounded more like middle grade/teen girls but oblique references made me think this was meant for adults.

Reading about The Haenyeo, real-life mermaids from the island of Jeju in South Korea. They‘re free-divers, following a tradition dating back to 400 AD, who hold their breath for two minutes at a time, for up to seven hours a day, to collect sea life with their bare hands. They‘re “consistently the island‘s primary earners”, they support their families (40% of their husbands are unemployed), & they‘re “a true sisterhood”...

*cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: “...acting as midwives & caregivers for the elderly, setting up shelters for victims of domestic abuse, helping with the Hanenyeo School And Haenyeo Museum, & ensuring their work is as eco-friendly as possible — all this despite only 2% of haenyeo in 1965 having a secondary education (many of those haenyeo still being active today.” And also while actively being derided & shamed by their society until very recently! When doing readathons, I like to break up longer books with something I can dip in and out of. This looks like the perfect palate cleanser between my novels and memoirs! #24in48

This books is coming out in a few days and if you like a) the power of female friendship b) feminist books with wonderfully conversational and funny writing c) learning about all the amazing women who have had an important role in history but who's stories were overlooked / forgotten / erased then add this book to your tbr right now! Without a doubt one of my favorite books is September. Could barely put it down. Highly, highly recommend.

Mindelan If you liked, it definitely check out her book about women in science. I loved it for a lot of the reasons you listed here. I can‘t wait to read this one and honor the accomplishments of more amazing women! 6y
rachelsbrittain @Mindelan yess!! Thank you for the rec! I loved it so much I fully plan to check out her other books 😊 6y

How to describe this book other than phenomenal? I'm a big believer (because it's true) that women have always been active change makers & participants in history, their stories were / are just often hidden, overlooked, or actively erased. & this book brings light to so many amazing groups of ladies & female friendships that have impacted their communities, cultures, or the world. Highly, highly recommend.

Mindelan Oh my god I loved Wonder Women and I can‘t believe I missed when this came out! Can‘t wait to read this, thanks for posting! (edited) 6y
rachelsbrittain @Mindelan you're so welcome! It comes out Oct. 2 so not a very long wait for it. I adored it so much I'm definitely going to have to go read all her other books now (including Wonder Women which was on my radar but I hadn't gotten around to reading yet-- so glad to hear that one is excellent too)! 6y

Well I'm already obsessed with this one, and I'm only two chapters in. The writing is so great and wonderfully real and conversational. The topic is excellent. And the historical girl squads are everything.
