Excited about this #littlefreelibrary find!
(1976) It's about a power struggle for control of a society of telepaths. It's also Butler 's first book, and not as nuanced as her later work; but already we see characters struggling with problems of class and power imbalance, wrapped in an engaging story. It may be lesser Butler but it's still really good.
I wasn‘t super impressed with the first female character I met in this book, but Amber is keeping my interest.
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 171 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram
The new Audible Plus offer made me add a bunch of books to my library, this is just a small selection.
Now to actually listen to these.... 😅

There should be two ratings for this book, as the author‘s first published novel and as an end to the series she built backwards onto it. If it‘s the first in the series, it would read better—there‘s a lot of set up that doesn‘t completely pay off and the ending is super abrupt. Still, a great, engaging dystopian story about power, caste, and the importance of connection—just keep expectations reasonable and go in knowing the publication history.
World building intriguing -- apocalyptic future earth ruled over by psychics in a stratified, heirarchical society -- but characters and plot lackluster. I suppose it was her first novel. It's worth reading, but don't save it for last in the series. Fun just for how weird it gets.
My seventh Butler made me realize she‘s a lot like Poe: I always love her openings, but my interest almost always wanes near the climax.
Still, she‘s well worth reading. In this, her first published book, she has a lot to say about oppression, and about how people fight to carve out new possibilities for themselves in dire circumstances. And she does it via superpowered characters in a post-apocalyptic world.
It‘s pretty great.
#bookreport time!
I read Butler‘s PATTERNMASTER and WHAT A GIRL WANTS by Kathia Zolfaghari.
I finished the second long Icelandic Saga and started the third.
On the comics front, I read HAWKMAN, SURVIVING THE CITY by Spillett and Donovan, and PAPER GIRLS VOL 1 by Vaughn and Chiang.
I reread Stiefvater‘s BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE on audio and started to reread Rowell‘s CARRY ON the same way, but it morphed into my primary.
So I ignored OATHBRINGER.
Okay: #weeklyforecast.
I‘m currently reading PATTERNMASTER.
I want to tackle another shorter book after I finish it—what, I haven‘t yet decided—then dive into OATHBRINGER.
I‘m gonna keep plugging away at THE SAGAS OF ICELANDERS, too, and I‘ll squeeze in a few comics. Definitely HAWKMAN. Probably also HONEY HUNT.
Finally, I want to reread BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE and/or CARRY ON on audio, but the people ahead of me are dragging their feet. Sigh.
My last book, BATTER UP by Robyn Neeley, started off cute but soon got boring. Oh well. I switched to PATTERNMASTER over breakfast, and the first chapter‘s left me cautiously optimistic despite how disappointed I was with CLAY‘S ARC.
This was a great finish to the Patternist series. Very fun read. (I just learned that there‘s a fifth book, “Survivor “, in the series that Octavia Butler apparently disowned. Has anyone read it?!?
Teray is the younger son of Rayal, the current Patternmaster. Having finished school, he is set to become Apprentice to Joachim. Coransee, Teray's older brother has other plans. He sees his younger brother as the threat to his inheritance that he could become. The stage is set for the struggle to become the all powerful Patternmaster upon Rayal's death.

How to celebrate the opening of #BlackPanther when you aren't seeing the film yet: Listening to the #BlackPanther soundtrack while getting ready for Octavia E. Butler book club. ?
Onto the last book in the omnibus: PATTERNMASTER!
Let the showdown begin! (Daisy can hardly contain her excitement 😹)
It looks like this is the last mtg. of my Octavia E. Butler book club at my local bookstore, for now at least. But I think I will still continue reading a work of hers each month on my own. Will have to find out which one comes next chronologically.
So I read this series for a book club, & I‘m glad I did. SciFi/Fantasy is NOT my go-to genre, but Butler has opened that door a little wider for me.
Overall, I‘m a little disappointed that we never really know how/why Doro is what he is.
Other than that, I‘m glad this resolved with some hope for Anyanwu‘s descendants, that they finally struck a balance with their gifts that may allow them to do more than survive & fight for power.
All finished with the Patternist series. Overall, I liked it. Really loving Octavia E. Butler's writing style and will read more by her. I found myself really attached to characters and not wanting to stop reading. I felt it was a post apocalyptic dystopian kind of book with Sci fi-ish origins.

Starting Book 4, the final book in the Patternist Series. I was little disappointed at first that Book 3 didn't seem to have a direct connection to Books 1&2 but it has so far been the best in the series. #octaviabutler #bibliophile #amreading #goodreads #bookaddict #booknerd
This was such a satisfying to an amazing series! The tone of this story has a completely different feel from the first two books but blends seamlessly with the third book. Interesting to note that this was the first book actuallh released in the series. She crafted an amazing series off of this book.
And now I'm done. What am I supposed to do with myself now?! I have been consumed by this series! And it's over! Why?! 😫
Oh look she has more...
I'm not sure how it is possible to have a great bookish weekend without actually reading but I have managed to accomplish just that. Yesterday, I made it to a great library book sale and saw @BookishFeminist @becausetrains and @JPeterson leaving with tons of book, saw my nephew off to prom, then found needed King books at 2nd and Charles. Today the Little Free Library went up! Now I'm looking forward Patternmaster tomorrow! I'm beat!
