They call it the plague A generation of children born with extreme genetic mutations They call it a home But it's a place of neglect and forced labour They call him Dog But Enoch is just a boy who wants to be treated as normal They call them freaks They might be right 'An amazing tour-de-force . . . One of Us rattled me to the core. An engrossing, emotionally-charged book and a work of terrible beauty. I loved it, heart and soul' John Dixon, award-winning author of Phoenix Island 'Without a doubt one of the best books I'll read this year . . . [it] has The Island of Dr Moreau's social conscience, the X-men's imagination and Harper Lee's heart. But it is DiLouie's skill as a storyteller that blends all of that into a compelling work of near perfection' Bracken MacLeod, award-nominated author of Stranded

Why did I wait so long to read this book!? I instantly fell in love with the plague kids. ? Brain, Dog, Goof, and Mary pulled me into their world and made me want to make a better future for them.

This book will make you analyze your own thoughts on what a "monster" is and just how far you'd go for someone you love. Heartbreaking, brutal, and beautiful all at once. A definite recommend.

Reggie Pg. 281...😭 4y

1) This usually happens once a week. Most recently was last week with the tagged book.
2) Jane Austen. I thought for sure I wouldn't care for her, but I read Northanger Abbey and am glad I did.
3) With, unless it has a distracting texture.

In the 60s a STI appears, creating children with birth abnormalities. Referred to as the plague children, they are put in institutions with very little oversight, resulting in numerous abuses. One Of Us opens in the 80s, following the residents of a home in Georgia as the government takes interest in the residents newfound abilities. Craig DiLouie's "One of Us" is X-Men meets Flannery O'Connor.

Reggie I was so madddddd!!!!!! when they kill the character they kill. 4y
vivastory @Reggie I was just looking at other posts about this book & I saw your angry one. I assumed it was about that death. Yeah, that was rough. 4y

Five books published by Orbit that are high on my SFF TBR. Orbit is second only to Tor in terms of quality & quantity of SFF publications.

A gut-wrenching read with all too believable insight into man‘s basic inhumanity.

This was muppet babies, as if they were mutants of the X-men universe, caught up in a slavery allegory written by the writers of The Walking Dead. Rough.

Libby1 That is an amazing review. Stacked! 5y
Centique God I loved the muppet babies. 😂 I probably can‘t read books about muppet babies in peril though 💔💔 5y
Reggie @Libby1 Thank you! @Centique Right!!! They were soooo cute. I loved Baby Gonzo. He just loved Piggy so much. 5y

Reagan Another great review! Stacked! 5y
Lindy The muppet babies at the start of your review brought the movie Happytime Murders to mind and then I couldn‘t get the comedy aspect to leave while I read the rest of the review, even though the book sounds grim. It‘s weird when that happens. 5y
Itchyfeetreader Muppet babies - I loved that show! Awesome review 5y
RohitSawant Well, obviously stacking 😄 Great review! 5y

Soooo many good choices. ONWARD AND UPWARD!

Guildedearlobe I have about 3 hours left in Kill the Farm Boy. It‘s light and fun and perfect after reading some darker novels. Plus Luke Daniels is excellent as usual. Meddling Kids is great fun too. The Cabin at the End of the World will easily be in my top 10 this year. I‘ll be interested in what you think of One of Us. It‘s in my maybe pile. Have mixed results with his books in the past. Great choices. 6y

This was a super fast read - read it in two sittings. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Not for the squeamish or easily offended. There is graphic content and very unsavoury characters, but the character building and world building is simply fantastic.

Guildedearlobe I read on of his books before that I didn‘t click with but this one looks interesting. 6y
