Dragonshadow: A Heartstone Novel | Elle Katharine White
8 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
The author of Heartstone once again infuses elements of Jane Austens beloved novel with her own brand of magic in this addictive fantasy that brings back sparring lovers Aliza and Alastair: fierce warriors who match wits, charm, and swords as they fight an epic war to save their world. The Battle of North Fields is overor so Aliza Bentaine, now a Daired, fervently wants to believe. But rumors are spreading of an unseen monster ravaging the isolated Castle Selwyn on the northern border of the kingdom. When she and Alastair are summoned from their honeymoon by the mysterious Lord Selwyn, they must travel with their dragon Akarra through the Tekari-infested Old Wilds of Arle to answer his call. And they are not alone on this treacherous journey. Shadowing the dragonriders is an ancient evil, a harbinger of a dark danger of which the Worm was only a foretaste. And soon Aliza realizes the terrible truth: the real war is only beginning.

I enjoyed Heartstone so much that I knew I wanted to finish the trilogy this month. The second book is also quite good, but for the love of Pete, WHERE is a glossary?!? This author has literal made up words that mostly make sense in context, but a glossary would have leveled up this book a LOT. However, I loved the relationship development between Aliza and Alastair. From the blurb I was afraid this was going to be one of those obnoxious stories⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) where the overbearing husband insists that she stay home but she knows how strong she really is !!! and takes off after him anyway. But I am happy to say that was NOT the case! Instead, they had actual conversations! Like adults! And weighed the pros and cons of Aliza going on a dangerous journey despite not being trained in combat, and whether her presence would distract Alastair from completing his job. Throughout this book it felt ⬇ 13mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) like they were really learning to work together as a team, actually TALKING to each other when conflict arose. What a great idea! 😂 The pacing of the story was a little uneven at times, and White has a tendency to introduce characters, not mention them for a while, and then have them reappear and assume that you remember them (I could use a character list along with that glossary!), but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed this one and ⬇ 13mo

Final #WeeklyForecast for March! Already! I am done with all my “assignments“ for the month, so this week is all about random stuff. Hoping to finish the Heartstone trilogy and maybe work on a Regency romance series that my sister loaned to me...last year 😂 We will see where the week takes me!!

Sequel to Heartstone (loosley based on Pride and Prejudice) this continues the story of Dragon Riders, with adventure, heartbreak, strong characters and great world building. I genuinely love these books.

TheAromaofBooks I have all three of these now but still haven't gotten to them!! 3y
Laughterhp I really need to read this one!! 3y

When embarking on a quest to read 20 hours in 4 days, you can't go wrong with a Pride and Prejudice retelling involving dragons and all sorts of adventure (and a version of Mr. Darcy that I might find more wonderful than the original. Don't tell Jane Austen 🤫😅) 🐉💙

BehindthePages Thats a retelling I never thought I would see! 3y
wordslinger42 @BehindthePages The first book in the trilogy is called Heartstone! I wasn't sure what to expect when I started it, but the series is really good! 3y
CrowCAH Sounds super intriguing! Stacked. 3y

Mehso-so

2.5/5⭐ The worldbuilding is fine, but the characters are very thin and often frustrating. Aliza and Alastair continually fight over who has control over Aliza's actions and stop just long enough to have sex (in fade-to-black scenes, for those of you who want to know the heat level). I was underwhelmed.

CW: miscarriage
