I read the last chapter of this book over a lovely white peach and I‘m mad they‘re both finished.
I read the last chapter of this book over a lovely white peach and I‘m mad they‘re both finished.
I'm glad I finally got round to reading this, now there's been a UK reprint. I'm also glad I have an ebook of the second book, because it's rude to leave the story there.
Caliban really needs to examine himself a bit.
Mind you, probably so does Slate.
Behold, as well: I actually achieved a #BookSpinBingo -- I kinda hadn't expected to, this month, what with moving and stress.
Slowly checking out T. Kingfisher‘s backlist. This was a fun read, but not as good as her later books. This began the world that I so enjoyed in Swordheart and The Saint of Steel series. So worth checking out if you are a fan! 3.5⭐️
One more #bookspinbingo for May. And another #roll100 off my TBR.
Okay. Not as humorous or as interesting as many of her other books. Not sure I'll continue this series. But at least it is off my TBR!

I've been wanting to read more of Kingfisher's books set in the Saint of Steel universe, and this is a fun adventure that feels like it's creating the foundation that Saints of Steels grows on following a disgraced paladin, a forger, an assassin, and a holy scholar on a mission to reach Anuket City.
This is a duology, and the ending felt like a halfway point in a larger story rather than a conclusion to a story within just this novel.
A very fun steampunk adventure featuring a forger, a paladin, an assassin and a very stuffy scholar. This book from T. Kingfisher (a.k.a. Ursula Vernon) is from The World of the White Rat series, which was nominated for a 2022 Hugo Best Series award.

So many quotes highlighted in the first couple of chapters; I don‘t think it can keep up the pace. I‘m getting ‘Paladin of Souls‘ vibes from Caliban.
A wonderful start to this fantasy duology. Slate is a forger who's been tasked with assembling a crew of criminals and outcasts to go on a suicide mission to help keep her country safe. She recruits a formerly possessed Paladin, an assassin and a earnest holy scholar. This book does a wonderful job of layering fluffy humor and over-the-top hijinks over a deeper and darker story about war, misogyny & mental health issues.
I binged a lot of T. Kingfisher over Christmas. All good but these two books are a really satisfyingly read. Character driven, imaginative original world building, tremdous fun. This book sets up the scene with tuhe main characters and leave you dying for the next one.
I am so anxious for what happens next!
Camping #vacationread No. 2, not yet departed but still on vacation.
Ah thank you T. Kingfisher. Reading the first book in this duology was like a breath of fresh air, I just inhaled the whole thing in nearly one sitting. I seem to keep forgetting how much I enjoy her writing, and she does seem to keep getting better and better. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and a half.
Now onto the next one!
Saturday is the best! Although puppy doesn't always understand the wonder of reading, he does like to participate in taking pictures..
I picked T. Kingfisher's The Wonder Engine as my new read and having a blast so far. 📚🎉
The first of T Kingfisher‘s Clocktaur Wars duology, AKA UrsulaV fixes paladins, this is an excellent fantasy read. Featuring theft-by-paperwork, assasins, paladins and enchanted tattoos this is a book I highly recommend!
5/5
I am utterly on board with this step one to writing a book: Piss off an author by a poor execution of a neat idea.
Also, the world needs heaps more stories regarding ninja accountants like whoa.

Kind of steampunk/fantasy that‘s heavier on the fantasy. Split into two parts (the second is “The Wonder Engine”). Good adventure with some unconventional characters including a wombat-like race. Gets dark in the last 1/4 of the second part with a plot twist I wasn‘t expecting. Well written.
