Wolf of Oren-Yaro: Book One of the Annals of the Bitch Queen
Wolf of Oren-Yaro: Book One of the Annals of the Bitch Queen | K S Villoso
16 posts | 11 read | 24 to read
"I murdered a man and made my husband leave the night before they crowned me." Born under the crumbling towers of Oren-yaro, Queen Talyien's life unfolded like a storybook. The shining jewel and legacy of the bloody War of the Wolves that nearly tore her nation apart, her marriage to Rayyel, the son of her father's rival, spoke of peaceful days to come. But all storybooks must end. Rayyel's sudden departure before their reign began created fractures that left the land as divided as ever. Years later, Talyien receives a message from Rayyel, urging her to meet with him across the sea. An assassination attempt interrupts Talyien's quest for reconciliation, sending the queen struggling in a strange and dangerous land. With betrayals in every twist and turn, she is forced to enlist the help of a con-artist to survive and save her husband from the clutches of those who would seek to use him for their gain...if he would let her.

This was disappointing. The location and intrigue was interesting, but where this lost me was the main character. She is supposed to be this strong tough queen, and at times she is but at other times she makes these incredibly ridiculous “too stupid to live” choices. I will not be continuing this series and only finished it because I have very beautiful editions of the whole trilogy which I will be selling. 2⭐️

The Broken Binding monthly subscription Book Box started a new set of books, Chronicles of the Wolf Queen.

The foiling design wraps around the book. Came with a bookmark. Signed & numbered. I‘ve never heard of this book so I‘m intrigued!

I have very complicated feelings about this book. I don‘t think I actually liked it because it was very violent. I also hated the whole reasoning for something. I liked some of the characters but didn‘t really like the Queen.

I‘m hoping to get this in the mail on Monday.

In all fairness, I have complicated feelings about this book. I think that works because the book can be complicated too. It is an intense fantasy with a solid combination of world building, character driven thought processes and action. There is a particular plot point that really annoys me but it would be a spoiler to say. Maybe after everyone has read it we can all discuss! #lmpbc

Chrissyreadit @Laughterhp sorry for the delay- my Two weekends with friends and family just did not leave me with a lot of reading time. I will mail Tuesday. 3y

I really wish it was easier to find more Filipino authors in adult SFF and Villoso fills that niche nicely. very intriguing gender-flipped take on a betrayed royal trying to navigate a hostile setting. Queen Talyien is an interesting and multi-faceted character, and I especially enjoyed Khine, the con artist. if I have any minor quibbles, I do wish there was a glossary included since the author likes to name dump a bunch of countries.

#WyrdAndWonder day 5: confounding expectations

The Bitch Queen of Oren-Yaro is a lone wolf, a woman far from home without friends or allies. What hope does she have against deceitful politicians and ambitious wealth?

KS Villoso‘s fantasy world feels enormous - I‘m looking forward to exploring more of it as Talyien continues her quest to bring peace to her people (however unexpected that is in a daughter of the Oren-Yaro)

It's so beautiful and warm out today! Almost 60°! ? I couldn't resist taking a walk with this gorgeous new fantasy book! ? It has a fantastic opening line: "They called me the bitch Queen, the she-wolf, because I murdered a man an exiled my king the night before they crowned me." ???

Meaw_catlady Ooohh sounds like a powerful story!! Enjoy the day! Happy Women‘s day! 4y

This has a great heroine, all jagged edges and determination yet surprisingly vulnerable; it has a gorgeous Filipino-inspired setting with hints of basilisks and dragons; and a hell of a back story. But buckle up for some melodrama and a pantomime villain who thinks sending assassins after a woman is a direct way to convince her to marry him. Come for romance, stay for stabbing.

ShyBookOwl Are there actual wolves (or werewolves) in this one? I love wolves and always looking for wolf books lol 4y
imyril @ShyBookOwl I don‘t believe so - it‘s just a nickname as far as I know - but if I‘m wrong I‘ll let you know :) 4y

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

I don't usually accept offers from authors to review their books, but I bit on this one because the premise looked interesting and I like flawed female protagonists. And this was a pretty awesome read! Not without its issues (the worldbuilding could be better), but everything else is pretty damn solid. Definitely worth the read. Give it a shot once it comes out on January 29 :D.
