Two real-life female pirates were the basis for this and oh how I wanted to love it because of Pirates! Female pirates! LGBTQ romance! Empowered females! But alas I struggled and wanted to DNF it so many times but I persisted and am just glad to mark it read.
Thanks, #netgalley for this #arc.

MayginReads Man, that's disappointing. The premise sounded amazing! 6y
mariaku21 @MayginReads Riight?!? I was there for that premise too so you can imagine how I felt towards the end 6y

Pickpick

There wasn‘t as much pirating in Mary Reade as I was expecting, but that didn‘t detract from the story for me.

Mary‘s mother forced her to pretend to be her dead brother, Mark, in order to get his inheritance from her rich grandmother. She lived most of her life as a boy, even her best mate didn‘t know.

I loved this queer coming of age story. It brought me back to the confusion, tension, and angst of figuring out where I fit in and who I am.

Soubhiville Where were books like this when I was young? 6y

I‘m a few chapters in, and I‘ll probably read the whole story today. YA lesbian pirate romance? How could you resist?

Couldn‘t resist one more photo from the signing at one of my favorite bookstores!

Cinfhen @CrowCAH tagged book might interest you 6y

Mini bookhaul from Malaprops in Asheville NC last night! It was wonderful to attend my friend Miriam‘s book release party! I was one of the first in line for her very first book signing 😊

I‘ve been anxious to get my hands on Starless too, as I‘ve heard it‘s just as good as her early Kushiel books!

The Pineda is a free ARC I received for spending $$$- most of my haul not pictured because it‘s for gifts 🎁 I‘ve got some wrapping to do 💜

wellreadredhead Malaprops is one of my favorite places! 6y
CoffeeNBooks I was just at Malaprops last week while we were in Asheville on vacation! 📚 6y
SledgeReader @Soubhiville I‘m in Asheville next month. Any other bookstores I need to hit? How about Charlotte? Can‘t wait to see Chihuly at Biltmore. 6y

Soubhiville @SledgeReader definitely go to Malaprops! If you like used books, also easy walking distance from Malaprops are Downtown Book And News and a cool shop at the Grove Arcade- I don‘t remember the name, but you need to go see the Grove Arcade anyway, it‘s a beautiful old building with Gargoyles! A bit out of the city is Mr K‘s used books. And on Wall St there‘s a small kids book store! 😊📚 have fun!!! 6y
Soubhiville @SledgeReader I don‘t know about Charlotte though... 6y
SledgeReader @Soubhiville Yay! I‘m makin‘ a plan! Thanks for the tips!! 6y

Soubhiville @PirateJenny yes Ma‘am! 6y
PirateJenny @Soubhiville I am so going to have to read it! Also yay! Everyone forgets about poor Mary in favor of Ann Bonny when Mary is the one who had the far more fascinating early life. Not that I have a thing for pirates. 6y
CouronneDhiver She must be cool... we have the same hair ‘do! 😆 6y
Soubhiville @CouronneDhiver she‘s a hair dresser when she‘s not writing, but yes she‘s very cool. 😊. And adorable. 6y

Mehso-so

This wasn't quite the queer lady pirate adventure I was hoping for. Less adventure and more homophobia / sexism than I expected, and the relationship between Mary and Anne was never really fleshed out or developed enough. An enjoyable enough read but I feel like it could've been so much more.
