The Awakened Kingdom
The Awakened Kingdom | N. K. Jemisin
22 posts | 33 read | 12 to read
The long awaited sequel to the Inheritance trilogy -- a novella by award winning author N. K. Jemisin where a godling must struggle to grow in the shadow of her parents. SOME TRUTHS MUST BE LEARNED THE HARD WAY... As the first new godling born in thousands of years -- and the heir presumptive to Sieh the Trickster -- Shill's got big shoes to fill. She's well on her way when she defies her parents and sneaks off to the mortal realm, which is no place for an impressionable young god. In short order she steals a demon's grandchild, gets herself embroiled in a secret underground magical dance competition, and offends her oldest and most powerful sibling. But for Eino, the young Darren man whom Shill has befriended, the god-child's silly games are serious business. Trapped in an arranged marriage and prohibited from pursuing his dreams, he has had enough. He will choose his own fate, even if he must betray a friend in the process -- and Shill might just have to grow up faster than she thinks. This novella, THE AWAKENED KINGDOM takes place after the events of The Kingdom of Gods and will also be included in both the print and ebook ominbus of THE INHERITANCE TRILOGY in 12/14. Week 2 of my hospital chaplaincy internship is in the books! ✅ And I finished The Awakened Kingdom, a follow-up to the Inheritance trilogy, as I pulled into the driveway today. All I have left is the Shades in Shadow triptych, and then I'll be kicked out of this world. 😭 I'm excited about my next #audiocommute book at least! George Saunders' A Swim in a Pond in the Rain. 😊

readordierachel Love this series! And the Saunders is amazing. You're in for a treat. 3y
Caterina @readordierachel It's such a good series! And I'm glad to hear that, the Saunders comes highly recommended to me from my partner's mom, and I just ordered it for my dad for Father's Day. 😊 3y

The #audiocommute continues! So nice to have The Awakened Kingdom to jump into immediately after finishing The Kingdom of the Gods. I was not ready to leave this world of N.K. Jemisin's behind!

This short story that takes place after the main books of the Inheritance trilogy. It is a perfect way to wrap up the storylines of the Three. I don‘t know what else I can say without giving away spoilers, but with a new goddess of life & death, things continue to grow in unexpected and amazing directions!

I loved visiting the Darre again. This closer look at their society, which flips gender expectations, was ingenious.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheAromaofBooks This was my #bookspin from January...it took me a bit longer to get through the series than I originally planned. 🤷‍♀️ 3y

My last read for January. #AuthorAMonth2021 @Soubhiville

Although this wasn't as strong as the original three books, I still enjoyed being able to exist in Jemisin's world a little longer. 😍

I really enjoyed this novella that takes place after the events of the third book in the Inheritance trilogy. I love how Jemisin took the thousand of years of female suppression and genital mutilation in some African tribes, and flipped it to turn it on the male characters. Would not complain if Jemisin ever chose to expand on these characters. #AuthorAMonth

I downloaded this from the library even though I haven‘t read the rest of the series. I wasn‘t sure I‘d like it for that reason, but I completely fell in love with the main character and now I want to read the rest. #AuthorAMonth2021 #BookspinBingo

So glad we got to see how things ended for the gods and learn about Sieh and the newest little god. Great wrap-up novella to this excellent trilogy. 8/10

A sweet follow up to Sieh‘s story. And I was delighted to have a capoeira sequence turn up!

This delightful novella set in the world of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms takes us into the future in Darr where men are being subjugated because of their gender in a very familiar way. A new godling called Shill shakes everything up! N.K. Jemisin writes such fascinating worlds. Big fan!

I finished the novella, The Awakened Kingdom, and now this brick is going back to the bookcase.

I really loved it. Shill‘s voice is hilarious, it ties up some loose ends caused by The Inheritance Trilogy‘s ending, and Jemisin once again displays her clever storytelling style. A definite pick👍🏼

Again, would have been more interesting if I'd read the novella right after finishing the trilogy.

Just okay.

This I loved. Shill's storytelling made me laugh out loud over and over and over again. I would read an entire book, not just a novella, told by Shill.

January stats. Kind of a slow month, but The New Jim Crow, The Awakened Kingdom, and the Sarah Scribbles collections were my favorites.

Day 11 #DNF #ReadJanuary
Thus is the last book I did not finish. It is a novella at the end of the Inheritance Trilogy. I've never really been a big fan of novellas. I loved The Inheritance Trilogy but just could not get into this.

I was disappointed with this one. This is a novella from the Inheritance Trilogy. I just couldn't get into it. It's written from the perspective of a brand new godling and written in the style of a child. I hardly ever bail on books, but I just wasn't engaged enough to finish this one. Maybe I'll go back to it at a later time.

That is how this story begins but if you ask Shill, the newest godling born in centuries, she will tell you that, that is not how one tells a story. Or so she has been told by Mama Yeine. And luckily for me she has a lot more story to tell than just 4 sentences. This book perfectly captures the cadence of a child/godling & her discovery of what her true purpose & nature is. Excellent addition to the Inheritance series!

I can't completely word how much I love this world that N.K. Jemisin has created in The Inheritance Trilogy but I absolutely love it! It's just so good and I'm so happy that my journey into it doesn't have to end quite yet since this is one of two novellas in the series, this being the first one.

"Like me! OK, that is not really why I happened. I happened because my parents had sex." Hahaha!!! This novella about a baby god set in NK Jemisin's the hundred thousand kingdoms world is awesome. I am thoroughly enjoying myself!!

This gem of a novella was included as a bonus in The Inheritance Trilogy volume I've been reading and I absolutely loved it. I have a new favorite author and her name is N.K. Jemisin.

Chessa Have you read The Fifth Season yet? It is SO good! I need to read this series, I love Jemisin! 8y
E.H.Kern I plan to read that one next. I'm already looking forward to it. It got a Hugo Nom this year. 8y
