Why You Eat What You Eat
Why You Eat What You Eat: The Science Behind Our Relationship with Food | Rachel Herz
5 posts | 5 read | 26 to read
In Why You Eat What You Eat, acclaimed neuroscientist Rachel Herz examines the sensory, psychological, neuroscientific, and physiological factors that influence our eating habits. Herz, who's been praised for her "ability to cite and explain academic studies in a conversational manner" (Washington Post), uncovers the fascinating and surprising facts that influence food consumption--such as why bringing reusable bags to the grocery store encourages us to buy more treats, how our beliefs can affect how many calories we burn, why TV influences how much we eat, and how what we see and hear changes how food tastes--and reveals useful techniques for improving our experience of food, such as how aromas can help curb cravings and tips on how to resist repeated trips to the buffet table. Why You Eat What You Eat presents our relationship to food as a complicated recipe, whose ingredients--taste, personality, and emotions--combine to make eating a potent and pleasurable experience. Herz weaves curious findings and compelling facts into a narrative that tackles important questions, revealing how psychology, neurology, and physiology shape our relationship with food, and how food alters the relationship we have with ourselves and each other.

Fa. Scin. A. Ting! From the importance of scent to the influence a plate‘s size/color has on how we perceive food (and how much we eat), this book delves into the biology and psychology of food choices backed by research. I got so much out of this book and enjoyed it utterly. You could even call it delectable. 😉

vivastory Sounds really intriguing! About 3 years ago I decided to retry, with an open mind, all of the foods that I didn't like & hadn't consumed in years. There were some big surprises. Especially avocado & olives. 4y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory We should probably all do that! She actually doesn‘t much get into how tastes change, other than some stuff in childhood and the loss of smell as we age. 4y
NatalieR Way to go! Keep it up! 4y

Many of us are familiar with these tongue taste maps. Did you know they are complete bunk? The original German research from the early 1900s was mistranslated, leading to the development of these maps in 1942 and they persist today. In fact, we can taste all 4 major tastes on all parts of our tongue, except along the center line, which is “taste blind.”

This book is totally fascinating! 👅

This book made me hungry. The best part is the science behind why smell is so integral to enjoying food. I give it 4 out of 5 donuts.

I'm in Chicago for the Midwest Archives Conference, and there is a Wow Bao super close to my hotel. 😍 I'm really fond of them, so reading Why You Eat What You Eat seems like good self-reflection. Spicy peanut noodles and pineapple ginger ale are also featured. ;)

Hoping this book can explain some of my bad food habits. The author is at Harvard Bookstore on Thursday, but I sadly can't attend.

AlaMich All I can think is, “man, those donuts look yummy.” I am probably the target audience for this book 😔 6y
krismlars @AlaMich I know, doughnuts are all I can think about 6y
