Girl Logic
Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity | Iliza Shlesinger
14 posts | 15 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes is as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world. When confronted with critical decisions about dating, sex, work, even getting dressed in the morning, Iliza argues that women will by nature consider every repercussion of every option before making a move toward what they really want. And that kind of holistic thinking can actually give women an advantage in what is still a male world. In Iliza's own words: "Understanding Girl Logic is a way of embracing both our aspirations and our contradictions. GL is the desire to be strong and vulnerable. It's wanting to be curvy, but rail thin at the same time. It's striving to kick ass in a man's world while still being loved by the women around you. "This book is also for me, because apparently expounding on a stage for two hours a night wasn't enough. (Trust me, if I could start a cult I would, but I hate the idea of deliberately dying in a group.)"

Mehso-so

I got a few LOLs out of this one. I probably would have related more if I were a good decade younger. I appreciated Shlesinger's candor, especially since many of her stories are pretty damn unflattering. She says some weird stuff I can't get on board with and other stuff I was nodding my head along to. I mean, this isn't exactly the Great Feminist Manifesto. It would have worked better as either a straight memoir or flat-out comedy.

“Women aren‘t crazy. We are not crazy. We are conflicted. Crazy implies an impracticality to our thoughts when, in actuality, we are processing so many dichotomic thoughts that we get frustrated. Then others perceive that as “crazy.” Women want to be appreciated for their mind, but they won‘t stop obsessing over the size of their ass.”

There are so many things I didn‘t like about this starting with the title and cover. I‘d pick it apart, but I don‘t want to waste my time. If this had been a straight up memoir, it would‘ve been so much better.

ChamomileAndCupcakes I love her standup comedy, good to know to avoid this one though!! 1y
britt_brooke @MissMia3003 I was not familiar with her going in, so you might like it more than I did. But, it wasn‘t well-written or well-organized and was generally pretty annoying. 1y
ChamomileAndCupcakes Oh dear :/ she has 3 comedy specials on Netflix, they‘re pretty good, and I generally prefer to watch women comedians anyway. I‘d recommend having a look at her comedy :) 1y
britt_brooke @MissMia3003 I‘d be willing to try - thanks! 👍🏻 1y

I‘m sure the experience of winning Last Comic Standing as a female then being mocked by the male contestants on tour really sucked and was completely inexcusable, but it‘s NOT like military combat. I can take a joke, but this is really fucking stupid.

PenguinInFlight Not a good analogy at all, any way you look at it. 1y
Scurvygirl 😐 1y
britt_brooke @PenguinInFlight Right! I know I‘m touchy because my husband did 3 tours in Iraq, but still. Just asinine. (edited) 1y

ReadZenRites You‘re right, putting your ego on the line vs putting your life on the line are hardly comparable! That‘s not touchy, it‘s just real. 👍🏻 1y
SleepyDragon Yeah ... uh ... no. 1y
Cinfhen I don‘t like when comics make a really ridiculous comment/ statement and try to justify it through “comedy” ~ it‘s not funny it‘s offensive 1y
ErinGoBragh1011 My best friend was a medic and did 3 tours un the Iraq war, my grandfather fought in WWII, my father, although never went to war was in the 82nd. This bitch needs a reality check. You can't compare the two. 1y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Same here, and I‘m not easily offended. 1y
britt_brooke @ErinGoBragh1011 My husband was a helicopter pilot and went to Iraq 3 times as well. 💚 1y
ErinGoBragh1011 @britt_brooke wow! I am glad he made it home safe. I can't even begin to imagine. 1y
Anna40 Fully agree with you! 1y
britt_brooke @ErinGoBragh1011 Thanks! 💚 I got more and more into reading with each deployment. It‘s truly what got me through. He‘s been out of the army several years now. 1y
britt_brooke @Anna40 🙌🏻 1y
Trashcanman What an idiotic thing to say. Unless you've been in combat you have no idea what's its like, and how much it impacts you for the rest of your life. Believe me it never leaves, your husband knows and all of us who have. 1y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman If this had not been at nearly the end of the book, I‘d have bailed. She also made a mass shooting joke that was definitely in poor taste. None of these “jokes” have anything to do with the book and just make her look (a) stupid and (b) like an asshole. PS. Thanks for your military service. You guys do not get enough recognition. 1y
Trashcanman @britt_brooke true words. Thank you, truly. Thank your husband for me too. And you as well, so many don't ever think of the spouses. They sacrifice a lot as well. And are in constant worry, I know my wife was and I know you and all spouses were too. 1y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman Thank you for the kind words. 💚 Being a military spouse isn‘t for wimps. ☺️ 1y

Ashley_Nicoletto Yesssss. I swear I spend more time trying to appropriately cover my boobs while not causing the rest of me to look giant than I do deciding all other clothing choices. 1y
britt_brooke @Ashley_Nicoletto Same here. And it‘s tough when everywhere you look, everything is so damned flow-y. I need some structure! 1y

Sounds interesting, and it's on sale for 2.99 today. :)

Jess7 Sometimes I like her and sometimes she annoys me. I‘ll download it though and check it out. @britt_brooke have you read this one? @TheLibrarian heads up 1y
Insightsintobooks @Jess7 I've never read anything by her, but I thought it sounded interesting. 1y
britt_brooke @Jess7 I have to be honest, I‘m not familiar with her, but this sounds like it could be entertaining, so I grabbed it. 👍🏻👍🏻 1y
Jess7 She got her start hosting a comedic type show called Girls Behaving Badly, and then later went on to get recognized in standup. She has recently hosted some gameshows too. She is funny, but sometimes she annoys me. She has Chelsea Handler-type vibes. @britt_brooke 1y
britt_brooke @Jess7 Ok, gotcha. I love (well, I used to until she got super political) Chelsea Handler, so this might be a good fit. 1y

This was a really fun listen. I laughed a lot and I thought OMG ME TOO!! so many times. Definitely recommend this to all my gal pals! It‘s very enjoyable.

My only complaint is the use of girl instead of woman but that‘s a personal issue I realize. #readwomen
