Double Fault
Double Fault | Lionel Shriver
5 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Tennis has been Willy Novinsky's one love ever since she first picked up a racquet at the age of four. A middle-ranked pro at twenty-three, she's met her match in Eric Oberdorf, a low-ranked, untested Princeton grad who also intends to make his mark on the international tennis circuit. Eric becomes Willy's first passion off the court, and eventually they marry. But while wedded life begins well, full-tilt competition soon puts a strain on their relationship--and an unexpected accident sends driven and gifted Willy sliding irrevocably toward resentment, tragedy, and despair. From acclaimed author Lionel Shriver comes a brilliant and unflinching novel about the devastating cost of prizing achievement over love.

Double Fault by Lionel Shriver was a wild ride. A searing look into the complexities of married life in the context of pursuing one's dream career. Wilhemina (Willy) and Eric are two aspiring professional tennis players battling their way through the WTA and ATP circuits, but when Eric's innate talent well surpasses Willy's, Willy is unsure whether her marriage to Eric is to blame. I loved this novel and will read more Shriver in the future!

Ho hum...a quiet Friday night. Is it wrong that I‘m drinking coffee while reading this amazing novel so late at night?

Crazeedi I drink coffee any time of the day or night! 😊 3mo

Managed to visit my favourite used bookstore in Saskatoon, Canada called Westgate Books. It‘s been some years since I‘ve been. This is my first time visiting their new location and it perfectly replicates the feeling of their old location! My only complaint is that their literature section is divided by male/female authors and the female sections are startlingly small. I couldn‘t find Wolitzer, but I found the tagged book!

LeahBergen I love that bookstore and always try to go when I‘m in Saskatoon. 👍🏻 6mo

Lcsmcat What an odd way to shelve fiction. 6mo
8little_paws That way of shelving is extremely off putting 6mo
Tamra Yes, that‘s odd organization. 6mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Weird shelving idea - but that photo makes me 😁 6mo
Pruzy @Lcsmcat @8little_paws @Tamra @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Glad you all agree that it is an odd organizational structure 🤔 6mo
GypsyKat Wow, that seems weirdly segregated. 6mo
8little_paws Honestly it's weird enough to me I probably wouldn't buy from them. 6mo
TheLudicReader What could possibly be the reason for such a classification? 6mo
Pruzy @GypsyKat @8little_paws @TheLudicReader I wonder if it is a hold over from when someone thought that they were highlighting women's fiction progressively. Now it just seems like they are highlighting how out of touch they are with such a small women's section that is in no way reflective of the current ratio of female authors active and writing amazing fiction today. GypsyKat @Pruzy I think you‘re right. 6mo
Pruzy @GypsyKat Thanks! 6mo

Pickpick

Love Lionel Shriver's style. While not as good as Kevin, I still really enjoyed this one. She explores failure in unique and beautiful ways. Double Fault is essentially about failure in both career and marriage and how the two affect one another. I found it uncomfortable to get through at times but also difficult to put down.

1. Anything chocolate- I‘ll take it all 👌🏻.
2. Netflix binge was Stranger Things, or Spooky Monsters with the kids, which is actually pretty cool. Currently re-watching Parks & Rec, my favourite, but that‘s on Prime.
3. The latest to stress me out was Double Fault by Lionel Shriver, and not in a fun way. I had to bail on the building marital tension 😬.
4. About 24 hours! 😄
5. I will when I figure out how to identify fellow newbies!

CherryPie I don't know how to identify noobs either! 😄 2y
