Chatsworth
Chatsworth: a landscape history | John Barnatt, Tom Williamson
9 posts | 1 read
The seat of the Cavendish family since 1549, Chatsworth is more than a great country house: it is one of Europe's finest designed landscapes. This book tells the story of Chatsworth's gardens and park, a grand, thousand-year narrative that takes us from a small Domesday settlement to Elizabeth Frink's sculpture of a stallion, set proudly at the head of the Canal Pond. John Barnatt and Tom Williamson show how Chatsworth's history is like a tapestry. Particular individuals-for instance 'Bess' of Hardwick, the successive Dukes of Devonshire, 'Capability' Brown and Joseph Paxton-come and go, weave their distinctive threads, and then move on. The authors trace these threads backwards and forwards in time, showing in detail the process of landscape evolution. The book combines original archival research and archaeological survey in a multi-faceted 'garden history', is richly illustrated with photographs, historic maps and paintings from Chatsworth's own collections and reveals for the first time the details of the medieval and earlier field systems and settlements which underlie the park.

One of my favourite places.

I have a day off in a few weeks, I‘m coming back with a picnic and a book.

CoverToCoverGirl Can I join you?... socially distanced and all that of course. 🤩📖 3y
KarinWestbrook Where is this? What a lovely spot to read and nap! 3y

LoveToReadLiveToRead @KarinWestbrook it‘s the gardens of Chatsworth House, this photo is at the top of a stepped water feature called The Cascade. I love the gardens, they‘re beautiful and when we were there yesterday morning it was so quiet and peaceful! 🥰 3y
KarinWestbrook I can‘t even begin to imagine what it must be like to live near to such a beautiful spot. Amazing! 3y
LoveToReadLiveToRead @KarinWestbrook I‘m very lucky to live 15 minutes away and visit regularly. It‘s a great place, as is the surrounding countryside. It‘s been a godsend in the last year x 3y

Pickpick

Adventures at Chatsworth with my #janeandtheyear2020 read, put me in mood to read History & revisit my pics from 2012 trip . Tagged book has most info. Wish it had more about Conservatory akaThe Great Stove. Bit dry as these kind of books often are. Pic is of my Souvenir book. When we were there, sadly this part of house was covered in scaffolding. It's not in Litsy database. Lite on info but full pics. 🏰 #chatsworth #orisitpemberly

While the Maze wasn't there in Jane Austen's time. It certainly adds to the the celebrated 'beauties of Chatsworth.' The Maze is located on the site of Paxton's Great Conservatory. It has a sad yet fascinating history. https://www.chatsworth.org/garden/history-of-the-garden/6th-duke-paxton/great-co...

Last of my holiday trips I visited Chatsworth again with family. Love it there. Picked up a copy of their guidebook for a read through and also a copy of the illustrated Pride and Prejudice which I love. Also @Mitch as this is close-ish to where I live I picked up a postcard to send to you for the #JB map. I‘m unpacked and shall be able to start my replies to people!

Mitch That‘s cool. Big thanks 😀 6y
CGKOENS That illustrated Pride and Prejudice has been on my Christmas wish list for a couple of years now. Nudging the Hub again this year! 😉 6y

This cute champagne truck is in near the Maze at Chatsworth. Does anyone know if it gets used or just decoration? @RachelO ? 🍾#emojinov @RealLifeReading

rockpools That is cute! We didn't see it (we were doing Chatsworth on a budget, so just did the park and shop) but I'd be surprised if it wasn't used. The Cadbury's hot chocolate van was pretty cute too 😁 6y
