Educated
Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
An unforgettable memoir in the tradition of The Glass Castle about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her head-for-the-hills bag. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her fathers junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Taras older brothers became violent. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if shed traveled too far, if there was still a way home. Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see ones life through new eyes, and the will to change it. Advance praise for Educated Powerful, moving, brave, naked and completely at home in its form, Tara Westovers Educated gives us homegrown American originals, who find their Mormon congregation too conventional, and raise their children on a western mountain, refusing them birth certificates and not allowing them to attend school. This is a daughters story of how she grew into herself and comes to understand her home. This book would be far less harrowing if it were a novel.Mona Simpson, author of Casebook and Anywhere But Here A punch to the gut, a slow burn, a savage indictment, a love letter: Educated somehow contrives to be all these things at once. Tara Westover guides us through the extraordinary western landscape of her coming of age and in clear, tender prose makes us feel what she felt growing up among fanatics.Claire Dederer, author of Love and Trouble

This is an amazing story of how much an education can change your life and the way you perceive the world around you. How education literally gives shapes to your thoughts. It deals with really difficult subject matter very well and she completely captures what it feels like to change so much that you must leave loved ones behind. I absolutely loved this book!

From the monent I had first understood that my brother Richard was a boy and I was a girl, I had wanted to exchange his future for mine. My future was motherhood; his, fatherhood. They sounded similar but they were not. To be the one was to be a decider. To preside. To call the family to order. To be the other was to be among those called.

Please tell me I am not the only one who spent half the book pissed at the Dad and the brother and the other half yelling at Tara. While this was a good book and I am glad I read it, I thank heaven I had the family I did growing up.

BBooks You are not alone....I yelled at her mom too! I also felt she left stuff out, granted her book her prerogative, but felt holes especially in the colleges part to the end of the book. 4d

So surprised this isnt 100%!!

SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime i agree! I'm always shocked when i hear people say they can't get into this book or dont find it realistic 4d
marleed As I read the book I had hesitations because I suffer from my experience of having just read A Million Little Pieces when the James Frey story fell apart. But I followed Educated with a pile of her interviews (searched you tube) and the Oprah one. After that I felt bad for my initial speculation. 4d
Cedricsmom I read this one earlier this year. I think she left a lot out, more sordid sides of her sick family, especially her evil, abusive brother. 4d

Ive added a new book to my favorite list & must recommend to everyone I know!! This book was stunning, raw, heartbreaking, amazing, sad, and stirred everything up in me. The things that Tara had to go through (the abuse, manipulation, heartache, injuries etc) and the common things that we take for granted that she had no idea about like the Holocaust was mind blowing and an eye opener. I have been ripped to pieces. WOW!

inmegslibrary That book definitely make me think about what I take for granted and about how many different ideologies there are that people I would have no idea follow. It was almost more of the beliefs about medicine than education (which one may stem from the other) that caught me off guard. 4d
inmegslibrary Definitely agree with you on eye opener :) 4d

I need more time to absorb what this book shared about family, memory, and guilt. The third part where Westover grapples with the meaning of each is so interesting I wish it was longer. Her struggle with her family is both sad and hopeful, and for her to unfold these struggles before our eyes in this memoir, regardless of vulnerability, is extremely generous and compassionate toward others she seems to recognize may be struggling through the same.

rather_be_reading i definitely agree needing time to absorb this! 4d

#Septemberwrapup #SeptemberReads My book themes for this month were Education /September 11th/ Native Americans.

suvata How was The Secret School? It looks like something I may want to read with my granddaughter. 3w
sblbooks @suvata It was excellent. How old is your granddaughter? It's a middle grade novel, but would be enjoyed by an early grade reader as well. 3w
suvata @sblbooks she‘s only six years old but she loves when I read books to her. 3w
sblbooks @suvata I think she would still like it. Let me know how it goes. 3w

A powerful memoir that highlights the challenges faced by children raised by a parent with significant mental health issues. Westover is an eloquent writer who takes great pains to accurately describe the events of her childhood. There are times when I wondered if the memories were filtered through the eyes of a child rather than a genuine reflection of an adult who has taken time to truly examine the accuracy of these events.Overall I loved it!
