Educated
Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
An unforgettable memoir in the tradition of The Glass Castle about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her “head-for-the-hills bag.” In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father’s junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home. Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one’s life through new eyes, and the will to change it. Advance praise for Educated “Powerful, moving, brave, naked and completely at home in its form, Tara Westover’s Educated gives us homegrown American originals, who find their Mormon congregation too conventional, and raise their children on a western mountain, refusing them birth certificates and not allowing them to attend school. This is a daughter’s story of how she grew into herself and comes to understand her home. This book would be far less harrowing if it were a novel.”—Mona Simpson, author of Casebook and Anywhere But Here “A punch to the gut, a slow burn, a savage indictment, a love letter: Educated somehow contrives to be all these things at once. Tara Westover guides us through the extraordinary western landscape of her coming of age and in clear, tender prose makes us feel what she felt growing up among fanatics.”—Claire Dederer, author of Love and Trouble

This was a very intense read. I found it very difficult to listen (audiobook) to some of the intense violence, abuse and graphic details of terrible accidents in this book. It is truly a survival against-all-odds story. I am glad I read it but also glad that it's done. How did she even make it?

Difficult to read but impossible to put down. Educated is a powerful book about love and family and survival. It‘s a powerful story about a bold woman who understood the only way to escape was to educate herself.

A bit more audiobook between clients!

Avanders Is that a plant on the left?? Spiky! Speaking of Spiky, you have a Spike! A friend gave me a jellyfish paperweight (in purple), whom I've named Spike. ;D (edited) 5d
Aimeesue I have a jellyfish paperweight like that, too, that I got at Arrowhead, Herman Melville's house, along with a little iron whale (painted white, of course.) 5d

A little bit late but here is my may wrap up! I read two books in may. "Muse of nightmares" took longer than I thought to read. It seemed like things kind of dragged on. "Educated " was a pretty quick read and a amazing, striking story.

Both horrifying and fascinating, I am utterly astounded Tara or her siblings managed to make it through their childhoods alive! The callous disregard for the physical safety of their children by both Tara‘s parents left me reeling, and yelling aloud to the audiobook. Her transformation from indoctrinated child to rational and educated Hi adult is remarkable. Brilliant!

I was always going to be a tough audience for this one. I don't particularly like memoirs, especially the non-traditional family memoirs that seem to be everywhere these days. Knowing this, I would never have read it if it wasn't a book club pick. To no one's surprise, I didn't like it. There are so many inconsistencies and implausibilities, that I got to a point where I didn't know if I could believe any of it.

JenlovesJT47 I had mixed feelings about it. She told it in such a detached manner and it felt like big chunks of the story were missing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Heideschrampf I'm glad i'm not the only one that wasn't awed by it 2w
mklong @jenlovesJT47 and @Heideschrampf Phew, glad I'm not alone here. I believe the basics of her story, and I certainly believe that she was abused by her brother, it's just so many of the details that don't add up. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot, when she would claim things like not knowing the word “professional“ when she was a teenager. I just don't buy it. 2w

CarolynM You have said almost exactly what I said - it doesn't add up. As @JenlovesJT47 says there was an awful lot missing from the story. (edited) 2w

Amazing. I‘m not much of a non fiction reader but this is so banana pants, it reads like fiction. I can‘t even imagine the strength Tara had to have to overcome her background in order to get an education. I also can‘t imagine having to learn on my own what I would need to pass the ACT in the first place. Will be a great discussion tomorrow night as the majority of my group are educators. This will stay with me a long time. #bfc @wanderinglynn

This was a Book Club pick, and we will be discussing it next week. So much has been written about this book, and now I understand why. Tara Westover had an extraordinary life. Raised by her survivalist parents, she was home schooled until her father decided it was time for her to work in the family junkyard. It is most incredible that she was able to breakaway and earn a PhD. Here she is being interviewed by Bill Gates.

I struggled with this book at times... the writing was uneven in parts, and it‘s uncomfortable to feel like the author of a memoir may be an unreliable narrator. Still, the story was absolutely fascinating and it was a fast read. Westover‘s personal journey was equal parts inspiring and infuriating.

Loved the audiobook narrator, and this was definitely worth the long hold wait with the library. 😃

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

CarolynM Yes, I wasn't convinced either. Such a lot missing from the story. 3w
HKGirl I'm reading this for a book club I'm part of. So far the members of my book club who have read it have absolutely loved it...but I'm going in with mixed feelings. I think I might end up sharing your opinion. 3w
marleed I tend to read memoirs like this with my James Frey glasses on because I took the whole thing about A Million Little Pieces oddly personal. But I did google her interviews after I read and I was impressed with her interviews so now I give her credence to her version of her story. 3w

I finished this a few days ago and have been pondering how to write this review. It's an excellent book. It's not about homeschooling, which I've heard it described as. It's about overcoming no schooling to get an advanced degree. It's about overcoming parental neglect, family disfunction, and abuse. It is raw and hard to read and violent and I did not expect any of it when I sat down to read it. Definite trigger warnings. But very well-written.

sprainedbrain I just started this today... I was immediately sucked in. 4w
