I've had the pocket edition of "Bilbo's Last Song" for a while, and it's one of my favourite entries in the Middle-earth canon. The original full-size edition I bought the other day to enjoy Baynes's artwork the better. First discovery is that the full title is "Bilbo's Last Song (At the Grey Havens)", the second that there is a middle register of paintings of Bilbo in various attitudes of reverie removed from the pocket edition. ??

Bookwomble By juggling the picture elements about, the roundels are printed at about the same size in both editions, but the vignettes in the lower register are larger in the original format. I'm so glad I decided to buy it, despite a slight hesitation about duplicating yet another book! 4y

Tolkien's short poem is given two pages per line by his favourite Illustrator, Pauline Baynes.The verso page has the poem line, framed by a different pair of winter trees on each page, capturing Tolkien's theme of leavetaking and endings, the recto page Bayne's interpretation of the stages of Bilbo's final journey to the West, while the bottom of both pages have vignettes of Bilbo's first journey with Thorin and company, as told in "The Hobbit".

JazzFeathers I'll have to seek out that program. Some of Tolkien's poems are so sad, don't you find? And some others are so joyful. 6y

Moray_Reads @JazzFeathers He could definitely tap into a deep melancholy, I always find Bilbo's poem "I Sit Beside The Fire and Think" heartbreaking too, I can't help but think it's Tolkien's own sadness at getting old. I very much recommend the BBC adaptation, I think it's very well done and Ian Holm plays Frodo! The song is here https://youtu.be/xO4aaiftLuA 6y

JazzFeathers I think there's more than that. Tolkien belonged to a generazione who lived through two World Wars... l can barely imagine that. He saw an age come down in the fire and ashes of industrial warfare and still like many of his generation believed that a new world would rise from those ashes. Though it took many decades. I always see this in between the lines of all his stories 6y
