A dystopian fantasy about war, faith, and waiting for space shuttles. Set five-hundred years in the future, Wonderblood is Julia Whicker's fascinating literary debut, set in a barren United States, an apocalyptic wasteland where warring factions compete for control of the land in strange and dangerous carnivals. A mad cow-like disease called "Bent Head" has killed off millions. Those who remain worship the ruins of NASA's space shuttles, and Cape Canaveral is their Mecca. Medicine and science have been rejected in favour of magic, prophecy, and blood sacrifice. When travelling marauders led by the blood-thirsty Mr. Capulatio invade her camp, a young girl named Aurora is taken captive as his bride and forced to join his band on their journey to Cape Canaveral. As war nears, she must decide if she is willing to become her captor's queen. But then other queens emerge, some grotesque and others aggrieved, and not all are pleased with the girl's ascent. Politics and survival are at the centre of this ravishing novel that will delight fans of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Jeff VanderMeer's Acceptance.

Bailedbailed

The story is a fusion of magic, a broken society, a future political struggle, and is a unique take on an over-saturated genre. Personally, I found the gore a bit gratuitous and couldn‘t stomach some of the descriptions of the beheadings. Such a shame as I think the concept behind this novel was quite unique, I just got lost in the violence which didn‘t always feel like it needed to be there to get the point across

A debut novel, set 500 years in the future where those who still remain worship the ruins of NASA space shuttles. It‘s been on so many podcasts, so many good things being said - so I found myself at the cash register! #mondaytreat #newrelease

Sophoclessweetheart Sounds interesting 🤔💛 6y
Mitch I agree @Wanderingwithwords My 2018 reading year is all about diversity - reading things I wouldn‘t normally. This fits the bill! 6y
Sophoclessweetheart It sounds like it might be good. I‘ll be interested to hear what you think x 6y

This is no starry-eyed dystopian society with morally grey inhabitants. This is kill or be killed, seriously messed up factions who have descended into utter madness. Overall, I appreciated the uniqueness that is Wonderblood. The idea of a civilization that worships space, space shuttles, and NASA was very cool to me but it needed improvements. …See the full review at www.thegenreminx.com #bookreviewer #TheGenreMinxBookReviews

I don't know how to put into words what I am thinking. I understand all the religious parallels. I wish there was more if Auroras story. I don't want to read more but at the same time, I still have questions. #stmartinspress #ARC #giveawaywinner @StMartinsPress

An unnamed girl repeatedly sexually abused, kidnapped and resigned to becoming a child bride. An America of the future where magic is venerated and medicine is outlawed. A doctrine of WONDERBLOOD that keeps heads rolling and the land saturated in blood. In short, this story is aggressively unsettling. And very bleak. But not too bleak that I wanted to put the book down. But also, what did I just read?

bookloo Interested... ☺️ 6y
