"Sarah "is the story of the prodigal son recast in the carnivalesque world of the highway truck stop and its environs. The narrator, an androgynous twelve year old boy, idolizes his mother Sarah, a "lot lizard," or truck-stop whore. He leaves the safety of the lot-a perversely idyllic kingdom ruled by Gladening Grateful Etc., a benevolent pimp who sent one of his boys to chef's school to cook gourmet meals at the truckstop diner-on a quest to become as famous as his mother. Adopting her name and sex, "Sarah" stumbles into dangerous and fantastic worlds pocketed away in the West Virginian wilds. He hitches a ride to the famous luck-restoring Jack-a-lope, is mistaken for a saint and must prove himself by walking on water. When he is captured by LeLoup, Glad's violent rival, "Sarah"'s life is all but over. Will he perish at the hands of LeLoup, or will "Sarah" find his way home?J.T. LeRoy has created a hauntingly memorable world, strangely reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland. Heartwarming as it is bizarre, beautiful and stunningly original, Sarah heralds the debut of an inimitable new talent.

(Day 2 - #RumorHasIt)

For some reason, this made me think of some of the most outrageous authorial hoaxes ever perpetrated on the reading public. Finally, after considering several (The Hitler Diaries, anyone?), I landed on the weird, winding tale of J. T. (for Terminator) Leroy, aka Laura Albert. Humph. Whatever, for what it‘s worth.... (shrugs shoulders).

Cinfhen I never knew that!!! #LiveAndLearn 5y
Mdargusch Interesting! 🤔 5y
emilyhaldi I need to spend some time googling this situation! 5y
Reviewsbylola Wow, this is fascinating. 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola It is a very interesting story...you guys should check it out. Plus, there are a couple (maybe more?) documentaries out there that cover this subject. It‘s such a strange story, too! 5y

Mehso-so

I've been on the fence about whether to declare this a pick or not. It's a dark fairy tale set in truck stop brothels in the contemporary American South. Told in the voice of a 12-year-old male prostitute who has learned to equate physical abuse with love. Raw, disturbing, funny, offensive & sad. The author's decision to publish under an invented avatar whose backstory claimed that the novel is loosely autobiographical adds a layer of perversity.

shawnmooney Great review - the biographical deception turned me off of this author irrevocably. More exciting, I don't think I've ever read a so-so-rated review by you before! 7y
Lindy @shawnmooney I bail more often than I give 2 or 2.5 stars (which is what I consider translates as so-so on Litsy. 1 star is a pan.) Last so-so was in December for 7y
shawnmooney Interesting - @ReadingEnvy and I are going to be talking about bailing on the next episode of her podcast. 7y

Lindy @shawnmooney @readingenvy I look forward to that episode! 7y
Joriebooks I feel like I've read this several years ago. I don't remember much about it. 7y
Lindy @Joriebooks It was quite popular when it first came out 17 years ago. 7y

Dragon I've heard this before but with Lysol. I thought it was an urban legend. 7y
Lindy @Dragon @rubyslippersreads It may be the perpetuation of an urban legend, since I came across it in fiction. 7y

I don't eat supper before Feminist Book Club, even though we don't start until 8 pm. Fascinating discussion, as always. It's one of those books that's overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the author, and I think that's fair, since Laura Albert created a pseudonym gay male persona whose backstory was that he did sex work while still a boy, and that his writings were "loosely autobiographical."

Only a few pages in, but I've broadened my knowledge already:
1. Raccoon penises have a bone. (Googled, see image above. You're welcome.)
2. "Lizard" is slang for a truck stop prostitute.
3. Kentucky coffeetree seeds can be roasted for a coffee substitute, but are toxic if unroasted.

Bklover Laughing out loud. Fascinating stuff!!!! 7y
goodbyefrancie Uh, thanks? 😯 This goes in the 'things that can't be unseen' file. 😉 7y
Lindy @goodbyefrancie @Bklover And while researching penis bones, I learned that humans are the only primates without them. Huh. 7y

Hooked_on_books Interesting that so many people say "boner." Jealousy, maybe? ? 7y
Lindy @Hooked_on_books That would be a good question for Helen Zaltzman, who does the Allusionist podcast about word origins. 7y
tpixie Great research!! In the book The Nightingale, in Occupied France, it said they used crushed acorns for a coffee substitute!! 7y

Best book ever! I cried a lot when I read it.

This book is out of print, but by some miracle my best friend managed to find it after much research. It was the best Christmas gift I received. #JTleroy 🤘🏼❤️
