A Problematic Paradox
A Problematic Paradox | Eliot Sappingfield
7 posts | 1 read | 11 to read
A wild, warm-hearted and hilarious sci fi debut in which a brainy young girl is recruited for a very special boarding school--perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and Stranger Things. Nikola Kross has given up on living in harmony with classmates and exasperated teachers: she prefers dabbling in experimental chemistry to fitting in. But when her life is axially inverted by a gang of extraterrestrials who kidnap her dad and attempt to recruit her into their service, she discovers he's been keeping a world of secrets from her--including the school for geniuses where she's sent for refuge, a place where classes like Practical Quantum Mechanics are the norm and where students use wormholes to commute to class. For Nikola, the hard part isn't school, it's making friends, especially when the student body isn't (entirely) human. But the most puzzling paradox of all is Nikola herself, who has certain abilities that no one understands--abilities that put her whole school in greater danger than she could have imagined.

I've recently dnf'd 3 different books for problematic things that the author did not even seem to notice. Very frustrating.

How about some recs of genre titles that are NOT transphobic, bi-erasing, ace-phobic, slut shamey, or misogynistic?

(Enjoy the random pic of my shoes.)

WhatDeeReads Love the shoes!!! I‘m gonna browse your read list and come back with some recs. 6y
WhatDeeReads What were the books you dnf‘d? 6y
BookNAround I‘m not certain which genre you‘re looking for but if Sci fi/fantasy is your thing, I highly recommend The Rook by Daniel O‘Malley. 6y

dylanisreading @WhatDeeReads Thank you!! I took a new pic cuz that other one was crappy, which I didn't realize until I took my phone off greyscale just now lol. 6y
BookwormAHN How about something rather tame but intriguing 6y
dylanisreading @BookNAround I loved The Rook! And I love sci fi and fantasy. 6y
WhatDeeReads This is one of my favorite quiet beautiful stories without the isms and the ics. 6y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I am loving this new supernatural thriller / family drama by a queer former sex worker author about a queer woman character! 6y
BookNAround @Bianca I‘m glad I was on the right track. 😁 Unfortunately I don‘t read a ton of Sci fi fantasy though so I don‘t have another suggestion. 😂 6y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @WhatDeeReads I am going to add that to my tbr. Thanks! 6y
dylanisreading @WhatDeeReads Sinner's Gin by Rhys Ford, The Theory of Attraction by Delphine Dryden, and Hard Rhythm by Cecilia Tan (the latter two I tried to read to get out of my comfort zone, and Hard Rhythm had some kink shaming that I didn't like) 6y
WhatDeeReads @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Bianca Be careful and don‘t confuse it with This similarly titles but not as good book. 6y
dylanisreading @BookwormAHN Added to my the! Thank you! 6y
dylanisreading @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Sounds great! Added to my tbr. Thank you! 6y
dylanisreading @WhatDeeReads Awesome! Thank you! 6y
llwheeler Have you read JY Yang yet? Black Tides of Heaven and Red Threads of Fortune, both very diverse fantasy (nonbinary, bi, poly, ... probably a lot of others that i'm just not thinking of off the top of my head) 6y
Broke_Girl_Reads Those shoes are fantastic!! If you‘re down with YA, I highly recommend Gentleman‘s Guide for lovely queer rep, awesome looks at life with chronic illness, and a little glimpse at ace rep that‘s going to be explored in subsequent books. Also the plot is ridiculous and fun 6y
dylanisreading @llwheeler No! How have I not? It sounds like I've been missing out! 6y
dylanisreading @Broke_Girl_Reads Thank you!! I love YA, but I think I dnf'd it after it first came out because I couldn't stand Monty and it didn't feel historically accurate to me (history major here). Maybe I'll give it a shot on audio. 6y
Broke_Girl_Reads @Bianca oh yeah, you definitely have to have the patience to watch Monty fall on his face several times, and I respect that not everyone has time for that. I did it on audio and I enjoyed the narrator a lot, but no pressure if it‘s not for you! 6y
callielafleur If you like fantasy, I highly recommend The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin. The Broken Earth trilogy is amazing. 6y
dylanisreading @callielafleur The Fifth Season is amazing! 6y

My biggest bookish "problem" ...

"As soon as I catch up on all my library/Libby holds, I'll read some of the books on my shelves and on my Kindle."

Immediately add another title recommended by a fellow Litten to my library holds requests ...

???

This book, you guys. I'm loving this one so much. It's so stinking funny I can't stop laughing. Young readers will love it, sure, but adults will get a kick out of it, too.
