The Quiet Child
The Quiet Child: A Novel | John Burley
6 posts | 4 read | 16 to read
From the award-winning author of The Absence of Mercy, comes a gripping and darkly psychological novel about family, suspicion, and the price we are willing to pay to protect those we love the most. Its the summer of 1954, and the residents of Cottonwood, California, are dying. At the center of it all is six-year-old Danny McCray, a strange and silent child the townspeople regard with fear and superstition, and who appears to bring illness and ruin to those around him. Even his own mother is plagued by a disease that is slowly consuming her. Sheriff Jim Kent, increasingly aware of the whispers and rumors surrounding the boy, has watched the people of his town sufferand he worries someone might take drastic action to protect their loved ones. Then a stranger arrives, and Danny and his ten-year-old brother, Sean, go missing. In the search that follows, everyone is a suspect, and the consequences of finding the two brothers may be worse than not finding them at all.

This was a story of a family in a small town. There were two boys and one boy would not/did not speak. Because of this, the whole town would blame him for anything bad that happens. One day both suns are kidnapped. From there you follow along in the search for them. There is a twist but a small one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ever read a book and find you don't know whether you liked it or not?
This is me with this book 🙄
I was enjoying it but then when I finished it I just found the overall story abit too far fetched and some what disturbing 😒
I'm confused but then it doesn't take much 😂

My first book from John Burley but it won't be my last. Good twisty thriller set in 1954 Cottonwood, CA where a town thinks Danny, a 6-year-old, brings illness & maladies. Danny & his older brother are taken & a sheriff fights to find them-despite the town's feelings. Unique, good pacing & twists-it left me unsettled in a good way. Paired with a black coconut tea affogato🍵🍨(somewhat) inspired by my reading for my blog book tour review. Link👇🏻

#AugustGrrrl #Mercy Maybe because it's Friday & my mind is tired, I was struggling with this prompt & finding a book for 'mercy.' Then I was lining up my weekend reading & saw that the author of the tagged book I'm reading for a blog book tour next week has a previous book called 'The Absence of Mercy." I'll take it! ??Both books seem to be set in small towns with dark secrets & citizens who might be lacking mercy when it comes to others.?

It's always nice to come home to find #bookmail waiting, but even an #ARC of psychological thriller pales in comparison to special book mail from @LibrarianRyan 😍😍😍 An adorable homemade Pooh bookmark and a sweet handwritten note from the #character2017 photo challenge. I love it! Mahalo Ryan, you made my Friday! 💜💜💜💜💜 Happy Weekend!
