Living Without Electricity
Living Without Electricity: Lessons from the Amish | Stephen Scott, Kenneth Pellman
2 posts
In a modern world where technology is taking over our lives, could we lead an essential, simple life without electricity? How can we get by without computers, power tools, phones, or even basics such as electric lights and appliances? The answers lie in Amish communities and other Old Order groups in the United States, Canada, and Mexico that have been living lives off the grid while still affording to be self-sufficient for countless years. Living Without Electricity examines the Amish response to technology and shows us why and how they live without inventions other people take for granted. Taking lessons from the Amish, learn how to light a room without electricity, keep warm without centralized heating, get around without a car, communicate without a phone, and others. In addition, take Amish instruction on how to cook and store food, pump water, wash clothes, and even run farms and businesses, all while off the electric grid. Reconsider the basic necessities of your life, and you might decide to orientate yourself toward a self-sufficient life without electricity.

Adventures in home ownership: We knew it was a fixer upper, but the tankless hot water heater seemed like a bonus. As it turns out, the house isn‘t wired for that sort of device. You can imagine my unhappy wife with no hot water. Electricians are working to rectify the situation but for the moment we have no electricity at all. Will I ever read again? Stay tuned.

Lauram Oh no!!!!!! I hope you have electricity very very soon. 5y

There was a train derailment near my house (I think everyone is okay) but that means I haven't had power for 2 hours. It's hot as heck and getting dark out. Suddenly this delivery lady comes up and rings my bell - a friend sent me 2 pints of ice cream and a waffle cone! Chico and I are enjoying some tasty stuff for a late dinner, and I'll be reading by candlelight for awhile. Hope the AC will come back on soon, I'm sweaty!

laytonwoman3rd Atta cat, Chico. Nothing beats sharing ice cream with someone you love! We had a cat many years ago who loved to ride along with us to Baskin Robbins and lick the melty goodness out of the end of the cone. 7y
RanaElizabeth Glad you got ice cream but boo for no power in the summer! Things get awfully sticky without even a fan! 7y
CindyMyLifeIsLit When my power goes out, I head to the library. A/c (as long as their power wasn't knocked out too!) and books--everything I need! 7y

LauraBrook @laytonwoman3rd I used to get tag-teamed by him and his sister. Sad but sort of nice to only have one set of paws to fend off now. What a cutie you had! (edited) 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's a great friend! I hope it comes on soon 🤞 7y
LauraBrook @RanaElizabeth @CindyMyLifeIsLit @Laura317 @ReadingEnvy @rubyslippersreads @saresmoore @Lcsmcat @Redy2trvl Power is back! Was out for 3 1/2 hours. I love WE Energies, they're reliable and whenever something bad happens they are ON IT! It was a mile and a half long train w all cars filled w coal. At least a dozen cars jumped the track in 2 spots, no one hurt, lots w/o power. Long term major road closures bc... 7y
LauraBrook ...some cars and their contents fell off/spilled over from a bridge onto a busy main road. Will be a long way to fix everything on the tracks. Am VERY thankful no one was hurt, though! Thanks everyone! I'm off to watch TV and drink cold things! 7y
