Skeleton Tree | Kim Ventrella
11 posts | 5 read | 16 to read
When Stanley Stanwright finds a bone poking out of the earth in his back garden, he is determined to take a picture of it and send it to National Geographic, thinking it will help bring his dad back home. But the bone begins to grow, reaching up out of the ground until it turns into a skeleton - a skeleton with an unusual interest in his unwell younger sister Miren. As time wears on, Miren's condition worsens, and the only time she is truly at peace is when she is playing with the skeleton. But Stanley is wary of him, especially when he finally manages to get a picture, and spots a scythe at the skeleton's feet. . .A whimsical, heartfelt story about a boy who finds a friend in Death with the help of an unusual tree growing in his back garden. With black line illustrations throughout by Victoria Assanelli.

This was a solid MG book. It reminded me of A Monster Calls, though that book impacted me more. This one was definitely an emotional read though. A boy navigates life with a critically ill little sister and newly divorced parents. His neighbor often babysits him, and she is portrayed as a grandmother figure with a mysterious/magical vibe. When the boy and his best friend discover a skeleton growing out of the ground, things get interesting.

On my way out for a walk around the block, I spotted that this package had arrived from my indie bookstore. Everything was even wrapped so nothing got soaked. How exciting! I skewed this order to MG and YA books, including some that I was going to read for #lmpbc but won‘t get to since I pulled out of the group. And then also my first Jojo Moyes book. Any that you recommend from the stack?

kstadt929 We should do a round of #lmpbc before my life gets crazy in August 🤣❤️📖👶 4y

My first book for #middlegrademarch has left a wonderful hole in my heart. I kept the tears off the page thankfully. Right up there with Terabithia.

Full review later.

I felt this way, and I‘m pretty sure I said this when I was introduced to my nephew. We had been told his name was going to be Levi, so Jaxon threw us for a loop.

A potential "next read" from my haul of goodies at the conference! Sounds really interesting, and I'm intrigued by how the subject matter and the age suggestion (9+) match up. Fingers crossed (skeletal or fully fleshed out!)!
