Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 9 February 1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British novelist. By marriage she became Grfin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as Mary, after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth and she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley (font: Wikipedia)

When the doctor had gone, and the two women from the village he had been waiting for were upstairs shut in with her dead father, Lucy went out into the garden and stood leaning on the gate staring at the sea.

My current read (another Elizabeth von Arnim) is a 1921 novel which anticipates the plot of Du Maurier‘s masterpiece, Rebecca.

Young Lucy Entwhistle is on holiday in Cornwall with her beloved father when he suddenly dies. Enter Mr. Wemyss; a man whose wife, Vera, has recently and mysteriously died. They immediately fall in love and it isn‘t until after they marry that Lucy begins to worry: what really happened to Vera?

#192025 challenge I‘m up to picking out books until 1999… #joysofjune

Librarybelle Wow! I love your organization! 2y
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle ♥️ It‘s been fun, some will be rereads and some Children‘s books, poetry- I‘m excited to clear some shelves and visit old favorites. (edited) 2y

TheBookHippie @DivineDiana still working on it but it‘s a “to do list” in google doc. I can check the box and it puts a line through it. I am printing one out as well. It‘s fun! Plus I‘ll have it with me at book sales etc 2y
Andrew65 Sounds an interesting challenge. 2y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I‘ve found several really interesting books! Plus it‘s just fun between naps. I‘m more exhausted than I thought from the school year! 2y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Only when you stop you realise. Nap away. 2y
DivineDiana Thank you! I‘m inspired! 2y
TheBookHippie @DivineDiana 🎉♥️ I‘m very excited about this challenge. 2y
CoverToCoverGirl Your SO organized! 🤩. I‘ll probably just wing it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @CoverToCoverGirl Welcome to my life 🤣💯🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😝🙃☺️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick A few of these are on my short list, too. I tried to plug in books I have but also noted a few others that I should finally get around to reading, but I'm far from being this organized. I also don't want to just read 40 Agatha Christie novels, 15 Anne Rice novels, and 4 F Scott Fitzgerald, so I want to round it out a bit. We have 3.5 years, so I have a starting point and if I need to have a year of Christie to finish out 2025, so be it. 😂 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I‘ll gladly try to email this to you I‘ve finished it …well not 2024/5 🎉 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick If you could, that would be fantastic! Some years I have 4 or 5 options and others, nothing. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick okay I think I sent it over 🤣 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It worked! Thank you! Lady Chatterley's Lover for 2023 Buddy Read and this challenge! 2y

A haunting story of what would now be termed as ‘coercive control‘. As Lucy mourns the death of her beloved father, she meets Wemyss, a man who seems to have all the answers; even the revelation that Wemyss‘ first wife, Vera, died only three months before in less than certain circumstances, can stop their engagement. When he takes his new bride home to The Willows, she begins to see a new side to him.

What starts as a comedy of manners accelerates at the midpoint into a gripping psychological-noir.

Written in 1921 Elizabeth Von Arnim‘s marital-chiller Vera predates Daphne Du Maurier‘s Rebecca by 16 years and makes for a fascinating comparison.

Wow, reading this book actually made me angry, but I couldn‘t put it down. What starts out as a dark-ish love story actually looks a lot like abuse by the end. And the ending—why can‘t I know just a bit more?!? I‘ve heard this was the inspiration for du Maurier‘s Rebecca and I could see some similarities for sure. Intense read!

Pageturner.Cliffhanger Just finished it! I‘m afraid the future does not look bright for Lucy...! 6y
HotCocoaReads @Pageturner.Cliffhanger Agreed! Poor thing 6y
