White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World
White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World | Geoff Dyer
10 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
From one of our most original writers (Kathryn Schulz, "New York" magazine) comes an expansive and exacting book firmly grounded but elegant, often hilarious, and always inquisitive about travel, unexpected awareness, and the questions we ask when we step outside ourselves. Geoff Dyer s restless search "for what? "is unclear, even to him continues in this series of fascinating adventures and pilgrimages: with a tour guide who may not be a tour guide in the Forbidden City in Beijing; with friends in New Mexico, where D. H. Lawrence famously claimed to have had his greatest experience from the outside world; with a hitchhiker picked up on the way from White Sands; with Don Cherry (or a photo of him, at any rate) at the Watts Towers in Los Angeles. Weaving stories about places to which he has recently traveled with images and memories that have persisted since childhood, Dyer tries to work out what a certain place a certain way of marking the landscape means; what it s trying to tell us; what we go to it for. "With 4 pages of full-color illustrations.""

I‘m pretty sure that Geoff Dyer isn‘t talking about this kind of sand or definitely not in the desert. However, this is the part of the world I have traveled to this weekend, and this book is about traveling, and the experiences and inspiration it produces. So there is that.

Has anyone read this compilation of stores & poetry by Geoff Dyer? What inspired you? We lived near Rocklin and I got Geoff to sign this book at the Bay Area Book Festival.

Reggie Are you in New Mexico? The White Sands near Alamogordo? 3y
LinesUponAPage @Reggie- Nope, I was in Las Vegas... there are many little off road/shooting spots away from the Strip. Looks like it could be New Mexico thought, it‘s all that desert. 😉 3y

Not book related - just spent a day trip visiting White Sands National Park. Never seen it with a cloudy sky - I thought it was even more beautiful without sun.

Getting rather stressed about what books to pack for vacation. Also not sure whether to bring two books or three. This is my current stack of options but it's changing hourly.

I probably didn't need to buy three books today when I'm going to go to BEA tomorrow, but alas. (Picked up these lovelies at Housing Works, Strand, and Three Lives and Company.)

"We are here to be bored rigid and then to wonder how it was possible to be so bored. We are here to wait at Hiva Oa airport in the drenching humidity and to feel definitively what we have felt before, albeit only fleetingly: that we *are* glad we came even though we spent so much of our time wishing we hadn't "

On vacation in Big Sky reading these essays and getting distracted by the sun on the mountains

Geoff Dyer talking during the Brooklyn book festival. I've been toying with buying this for a while because the quote on the back is incredible, but hearing him speak and read a passage sealed it for me.

This was also part of the 'Darkly Comic' panel which I think describes the book very well. Hilarious, dark, travel writing. 👍 #BKBF

Got this from the library. I probably won't actually have time to read this before it's due, and bc of my 3yo can't do #24in48 but I'll be thinking of everyone!
