Land of Love and Ruins
Land of Love and Ruins | Oddny Eir
Oddny Eir is an authentic author, philosopher and mystic. She weaves together diaries and fiction. She is the writer I feel can best express the female psyche of now and has bridged the gap between rural Iceland and Western philosophy. A true pioneer!!!!!!!! Bjork The winner of the Icelandic Women s Literature Prize in 2012, "Land of Love and Ruins" is the debut novel by a daring new voice in international fiction: Oddny Eir. Written in the form of a diary but with fantastical linguistic verve, the narrator sets out on a universal quest: to find a place to belong and a way of being in the world. Paradoxically, her longing to settle down drives her to embark on all kinds of journeys, physical and mental, through time and space, in order to find answers to questions that concern not only her personally, but also the whole of humankind. She explores various modes of living, ponders different types of relationships and contemplates her bond with her family, land and nation; trying to find a balance between companionship and independence, movement and stability, past, present, and future. An enchanting blend of autobiography, diary, philosophical inquiry, and fantasy, "Land of Love and Ruins "is a richly imagined and utterly unique book about being human in the modern world."

Bailedbailed

My final #litsypassport book of the year and I bailed. Written in first person with a narrator who rambles and is unclear. I read 50 pages and give up trying to see if an understandable chapter will appear.

(P.S. Bjork is quoted on the cover as saying this author “can best express the female psyche of now.” The narrator is so confusing and unstable, and I hope to hell she‘s wrong.)

Still reading in the sun - still reading about Iceland. And the longing is growing and the next Iceland holiday still far far away.

This autobiographical novel written as diary entries covers a whole host of topics from Iceland after the economic crisis - belonging, home, love, land ownership, natural resources, the spirit of places, sagas, siblings, hermits - with memorable characters and astounding descriptions of places around the country. This is the first by the author to be translated into English and I'm hoping for more.

Kboltz You need to maybe view that cover with 3D glasses🤔 6y

This is a strange, quirky little book that pulls and pushes... and I have no patience for it right now. It seems to bend genres, mixing diary and novel in an odd melange. Some beautiful language, but not enough to keep me invested. Yes, the blurb from Bjork should have cued me in.

WanderingBookaneer I bought this one a while back, wife. 7y

DNF in page 111. I had a hard time caring about the characters and I felt like there wasn't any point to the book. I know at one point sustainability was going to be mentioned... i think I'm going to give up on my themes of each month. I might be starting grad school this fall. I want to get through as many TBRs as possible. #iceland #dnf #literature #time

I read this book last year and completely forgot to write a review. I remember it being very very strange. Strange in a good way though!

Littens! I present to you my humble November roundup. November was a tough month but I'm so happy I was able to continue reading. Favorite this month is a no brainer- Zadie Smith's newest novel Swing Time. I'm so inspired by you all to make December my best reading month! ❤️📚

So inspired by everyone's November roundup posts! Litsy readers are the best readers. Someone read 76 books in November! 😱😱 I'm a bit afraid to look at my roundup. Maybe I'll post it after I'm done with my current read. What's 100 pages by the end of today? 😂😂😂#motivated

Bookworm54 I always feel in awe of people who read a large number of books a month. If I read 5 I am impressed! With working full time now I didn't read much last year (28 in total) but I am already close to 50 with another month of the year to go! And it includes holidays 📚🍁🍂🎄 7y

“In a constellation that contains Ben Lerner and Terry Tempest Williams, there shines Oddný Eir: poet, environmentalist, Björk collaborator... Every essayistic tangent in these diary entries—whose endless succession of memorial days includes Cream-Puff Day and the Feast of Psychoanalysis—folds itself back into the exceptionally tender core, which is all the more tender for being so fiery with passion.”

A quietly strange book. Best read for the glimpse into the mind of its protagonist and her thoughts on, well, pretty much anything, rather than plot or action. Out in October.

MrBook I see a pairing here! What wonderful beverage do we have in the tumbler? 8y
Simona @Genrebending Sounds like my kind of book - without plot and strange character.😊 8y
Genrebending @MrBook nothing very fancy, just some bourbon 🙂 8y
MrBook Just some bourbon? Just some bourbon?! One of the nectars of the gods is not "just" anything ?. Unless one says it's just incredible ?. Well done! Bravo ???????! 8y
