Would Everybody Please Stop?
Would Everybody Please Stop?: Reflections on Life and Other Bad Ideas | Jenny Allen
4 posts | 2 read | 14 to read
"One of the funniest writers in America." Thats what The New Yorkers Andy Borowitz calls Jenny Allenand with good reason. In her debut essay collection, the longtime humorist and performer declares no subject too sacred, no boundary impassable. With her eagle eye for the absurd and hilarious, Allen reports from the potholes midway through lifes journey. One moment shes flirting shamelesslyand unsuccessfullywith a younger man at a wedding; the next shes stumbling upon X-rated images on her daughters computer. She ponders the connection between her ex-husbands questions about the location of their silverware, and the divorce that came a year later. While undergoing chemotherapy, she experiments with being a wig person. And she considers those perplexing questions that we never pause to ask: Why do people say It is what it is? Whats the point of fat-free half-and-half ? And havent we heard enough about memes? Jenny Allens musings range fluidly from the personal to the philosophical. She writes with the familiarity of someone telling a dinner party anecdote, forgoing decorum for candor and comedy. To read Would Everybody Please Stop? is to experience life with imaginative and incisive humor.

Mehso-so

It was 'meh'. Not terrible but not my kind humor. There was some stories I enjoyed but I was otherwise unimpressed.

#TBRtemptation post 1! Recently released. A series of first-person humor essays reflecting on life halfway through it. Subjects range from the serious to the not-so-much: on being single later in life; on parenting a teenager; on living with a serious illness; recycling rules; memes; women detectives on tv; "it is what it is"; and much more. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Mehso-so

I'm desperately trying to catch up on my #netgalley arcs. This collection is a bit mystifying. The essays based on her own experiences were good and humorous, but there were some really silly pieces thrown in that resulted in quite a bit of skimming. 3 stars overall.

I'm taking a literal approach to #ThatJokeIsntFunnyAnymore. Whenever I disagree with my family on politics or religion or life in general, they respond with something along the lines of "Why don't you just stay in your little book world and don't worry about what's happening in real life?" They think it's hilarious. I think it's annoying. #JuneTunz
