Luka and the Fire of Life
Luka and the Fire of Life | Salman Rushdie
" You ve reached the age at which people in this family cross the border into the magical world. It s your turn for an adventure yes, it s finally here! " So says Haroun to his younger brother, twelve-year-old Luka. The adventure begins one beautiful starry night in the land of Alifbay, when Luka s father, Rashid, falls suddenly into a sleep so deep that nothing and no one can rouse him. To save him from slipping away entirely, Luka embarks on a journey through the world of magic with his loyal companions, Bear, the dog, and Dog, the bear. Together they encounter a slew of fantastical creatures, strange allies, and challenging obstacles along the way all in the hope of stealing the Fire of Life, a seemingly impossible and exceedingly treacherous task."

I likes this middle grade story, filled with magic and mythology from so many cultures and beliefs. While charming and unique, it was a little flat at times and felt like it was moving at a snail‘s pace for much of the book. The end was great, I do plan to read the other book in the series. #authoramonth @Soubhiville #BookspinsBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Teresereading I haven't heard of this series 8mo

I‘m not a magical realism fan so I wanted to read one of his nonfiction books for #AuthorAMonth, but I‘m not going to finish it by the end of the month. So I picked up this one as well. And now… I‘m still not into magical realism. 😬 😖 It‘s OK. Drags in some parts, fun in others. It gave me strong vibes of “The Phantom Tollbooth” (which is way better, IMO).

mcctrish I am not a magic realism fan at all. 8mo
Amiable @mcctrish Right? It's a struggle for me to get through one when/if I have to read it. 😬 8mo
mcctrish My husband loves them and I just do not get it at all 8mo

1. I can‘t think of any book I‘ve read set in India, unless the tagged book is. Although, Luka is mostly set in a dream land to save his father, oh, also my kids have an interesting book about monsters around the world and they talk about Ravana, with 10 heads and 20 arms.
2. Salman Rushdie, Tagged
3. I LOVE Indian food and my Indian friends!
Happy #indianindependenceday!

Blackink_WhitePaper Thanks for playing💐 I need to read the tagged book... 4y
Cosmos_Moon I‘d love to hear of other authors! This popped up when I was searching Salman Rushdie... another I‘ll have to read. Looks good! 4y

Good little story and a cute adventure. Just finished as my April #doublespin, although my 3rd from April #BookSpin list. All this downtime has actually been pretty busy for a working from home, homeschooling mom. Definitely know I‘ll just be finishing my May bookspin & double spin this month. Maybe one extra in there. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Great review!! And no pressure - I feel like life has been busier than ever lately!! 4y
Cosmos_Moon @TheAromaofBooks I don‘t feel pressured by reading... I just wish I could leisure read more. Instead, I‘m reading reports and assessments, and writing plans, and helping with grade school homework most of the day 😂 still good, but not as fun. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I feel you!!! Then when I get some down time, all I want is a nap! 😆 4y

‘There was once, in the city of Kahani, in the land of Alifbay, a boy named Luka who had two pets, a bear named Dog and a dog named Bear, which meant that whenever he called out, “Dog!” the bear waddled up amiably on his hind legs, and when he shouted, “Bear!” the dog bounded toward him, wagging his tail.‘ #FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl #RunOnSentence

#didntlikeitstillfinished this is a sequel to Haroun and the Sea of Stories, which I love very much. Unfortunatelly, it was lifeless and flat. Ilustration by Ben Tobitt.

The only #orangecover I was able to find in my bookshelves!! 😁 #photoadaynov16 sure makes me rumble through my books like never before, love the challenge and am proud that I was able to post something everyday so far, even though the lion share of my books is in Germany. So glad to be visiting home for Christmas this year! Guess what will be in my suitcase when I return to Japan 😉

Even when I'm in the mood for some juvenile reading, I turn towards Rushdie. What a master story teller. And this is such a beautiful cover!

This is a pretty fun book. I like how the entire thing played out (pun intended,) even though at times things seemed too easy for Luka.
